Background check? Is this legit

My friend was at an interview yesterday evening and at the end of the interview they asked for him to fill out a background check. He never put down his address, PSI number or date of birth on the application as it was not asked he just got asked about criminal records and his last 2 employers. Is this really a background…

Is this really a background check?

Thought they would at least ask him for his date of birth, address and PSI number?

Also, is doing a background check a sign that he got the job?

It all depends on the company what they want to check; for example Paypal used to (still do?) have a control that wanted everything while others may be satisfied simply by knowing you don't have criminal convictions.
