falsely claiming the sick

A friend of mine recently told me about how one of his uncles has been falsely claiming the sick benefits for the past 10 years. He had an accident a decade ago but is fine now but yet still claiming pretending he has a deformity.

Why is the government not doing more to counter act such fraud ? What are the current methods they use to investigate false claims ?

How can a person pretend to have a deformity?

Is he pretending to be profoundly cross-eyed or something?

Why don't you report said person?

Not my style. Surely the government should be doing more to counter act such fraud by getting the person medically examined

They actively monitor 'After Hours' as their primary source of information. Or, you could just phone them up and report him for welfare fraud....

Will you be reporting this to the relevant authorities?

Reporting the fraud itself - not your 'style'

Complaining online for days straight that it's terrible and the government need to do something about this - not a problem.

    :confused::confused::confused:

I never said I wanted someone to report the person I'm just highlighting the fact that the government should have other ways of discovering false claims themselves rather then waiting for people to pick up the phone.

This happens, it's entirely possible that your friend's uncle has been through this process already and the Department have decided he's fully entitled to his payment.

Why anyone would go around telling their friends about their relatives' social welfare payments is beyond me..

    There are periodical assessments folks.

They aren't the most rigerous though.

No point whinging about it if you are not prepared to take action yourself.

    http://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/politics/state-crackdown-social-welfare-fraud-3397563

Some serious monies have already been saved.
The State saved €632million last year following a crackdown on social welfare fraud, a new report revealed.

The Department of Social Protection report for 2013 showed huge success in highlighting fraud and taking cases against scammers.

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton revealed that 674 cases were taken against fraudsters last year following more than 25,000 tip offs from the public.

Initiatives like facial imaging in welfare offices has seen the State claw back a whopping €632million in benefits.

Ms Burton’s department carried out more than one million reviews of welfare payments last year.

The said person claims his arm is deformed so can't work even after having surgery and therapy. Surley if they were to investigate and inspect this persons day to day activity's they could see if said person is lieing or not

Why would they investigate? How many investigators should they hire and how long should they follow EVERYONE claiming the sick/dole for?

But investigating everybody would mean that your constantly guilty until they tell you your not. They could however investigate the accused, if people reported them

Well whatever you do don't report it, because that would make sense and that's a silly thing to do.

OP, your attitude is exactly why the system is so open to the rampant abuse it gets.

    Report it. FFS.

So you want the government to sort it out and you think it should be sorted out but you won't do anything to help them sort it out?

If a house on your street was burning down would you be on here asking why the government aren't doing more to help the fire brigade stop houses burning down?

Imagine the uproar if the government started monitoring everyone receiving welfare's day-to-day activities. :pac: I'm sure plenty of people on welfare feel bad enough about it already without being constantly under investigation.
And that's to say nothing of the logistical and financial ridiculousness of the idea.

    The delusion.

Does that automatically mean you can't pick up the phone to report him?

You can even do it online.

I believe ( based on my experience) that the op is lying or being lied too.

My missus was on the sick and after 9 months was called for an interview.
The building was opposite Pearce street garda station in Dublin.
20 questions if you will. most of which weren't relevant to her illness.
She got a letter 2 weeks later saying they were terminating her benefit and she could apply for the dole or appeal.
despite letters from relevant doctors saying g she had x and y.
whereas this interviewer never introduced themselves or stated their qualifications.

If she appealed she would get no benefit till the appeal was successful (if it was).
In our case short term she needed to live so it was the dole and eventually booted off that despite still having X and y.

Given my experience I doubt the chap is faking it as they have been ruthless since the economic collapse.

Are you close enough to this guy to know this though? Until he tells you, or you've seen proof it's all hear-say. Hear-say should be reported if your worried, your not the judge and jury, they are. Report and be done with it.

Welcome to the hourly dole bashing thread.

Op why don't you simply report this person and stop crying about it online, its obviously causing you some serious bother.

You can't claim your arm is deformed if is not. Presumably he has been examined and run through pretty rigorous tests to assess his range of motion and strength in the limb. If he has a serious issue in these regards his ability to work might be seriously compromised. He might have learned to adapt to his disability so that other people no longer notice it in his daily life but he might well notice it himself and just not regularly complain.
The situation may be very different to your understanding of it.

You could be a quadruple amputee and they would still need your GP to officially confirm it and fill in the correct forms.

I don't know why we have an illness benefit for longer than a year.

disability benefit is supposed to be for any illness or disability thats expected to last 1 year or more...

seems redundant. (illness benefit allows people to get double the benefit when doing a course, though they require permission...idk..seems a bit ..of a waste.)

also, isnt illness benefit supposed to require frequent medical checks?

why would anyone want to be on it for more than a year? switch to disability and get a bus pass and less hassle.
