My missus put her car in the ditch at the weekend. Pulled off the bumper and the underwing stone guard and bent the wing a little. Main Dealer cost to fix it? €45!

Step up for a recommendation O'Callaghan's of Kanturk

Heard a lot of good things about them.

Fair dues. However I wouldn't dream of putting a car into a main dealer for things like body repairs because in most cases the work gets farmed out and a hefty premium added.

    Hence the recomendation...

Same here with regards marks on my car too. Main dealer quote of €250, which seems very reasonable. I hope I don't have to eat my words, but I've seen some of their body repair work and it's of a high standard.

So they screwed the bumper and stonegaurd back on and straightened out the wing? Did they have to replace anything?

Do you mean fix or just push it back together?
I cannot see how any wrong repair could be done within that price

be sensible, how could that figure include parts? You'd barely get an air fresher for that

45 Euro !!! WTF Rip off Ireland again, I know a guy who does that type of work all day long, charges no more than a tenner....SHOP AROUND

What kind of cryptic nonsense is this thread.
Car was damaged. Car goes to main dealer.
Car has wing among other things repaired for 45 quid.
I don't get it. Did they just pop out the wing and screw the other bits back together?
    Hardly a repair tbh.

Maybe not. But they sorted the OP out for very little money. Most dealers want a lot more than €45 for having their 16 year old apprentice unscrew the sump nut and replace the oil filter (10 minutes of work in a garage environment)

Most main dealers bill by the hour or half hour. There's more than the apprentices wages that have to be covered when working on a car.

At €45, a tenner will disappear in vat so the garage has €35 to pay for a trained person to do the work, the premises and tools, and someone to do the admin before they can take a profit, which will be taxed.

My main dealer, Windsor Bray, has done several small jobs like that for me in the past for exactly €0.00. Things such as checking underside of car for damage after a slide into a ditch one snowy winter, securing a loose rattling heatshield, something similar to the OP's case where the rear mudguard and skirt were partly ripped off and slightly bent, lubricating a couple of sticking windows etc. I've offered to pay on each occasion but it was refused.

Maybe there was no VAT. Maybe the garage didn't intend to make a profit on the transaction .. goodwill does exist and sometimes generates repeat custom which may just be profitable in the long run

For legit companies there's always a tax no matter what the job.

We have five franchises, so our place is fairly big, but we don't have a single apprentice since 2010. When the Celtic Tiger kicked the bucket, most places stopped taking on apprentices.

But let me ask something: you pop in to your GP to get you usual prescription etc. and you get charged 50 (if you are lucky) for a 5 minute job.
    Isn't that expensive?

A few months ago I had to take my one year old to visit a pediatrician. He spent 20 minutes with us and we were charged 150 for the session.
    Wasn't that expensive?

I don't know what you guys do for living, but I would like to come to your workplace and would like to see you all do something for free of charge...

That's why IMO it's normally worth being a regular customer rather than always looking for the cheapest quote.

@OP, fair play to them, a lot of places would have charged a lot more even for that small repair!

We still haven't got to the bottom of what they actually did. He said the wing was damaged.
It is still damaged I presume
