Im looking for a small fast Diesel, but am seeing that Golfs, A3s are all really expensive and impossible to find a fresh one.

Would the below be a good alternative?
I've read the diesel alfas are really strong but not overly sure!
I know the guy selling it (not very well) but he plays golf with another friend of mine, so i know the car is well looked after.

I think that may be the advert he/she was trying to reference.

Looks a very nice special edition, and appears to have had the important work done and documented history.

I've a 2.4 156 which is a shade quicker and have found diesel Alfas very smooth when looked after.

Certainly much more impressive than boring VW & Audis.

Would you consider a GT if you've come this far? http://cars.donedeal.ie/find/cars/for-sale/Ireland/?filters[fuelType]=Diesel&filters[make]=Alfa+Romeo&filters[model]=GT&sort=publishDate+desc

I loved my 147, in 1.6 petrol. But preferred my GT, which was a 1.9 diesel. Had it remapped. The 1.9 engine feels a bit rough, especially around town. It's a pretty dated engine at this point I suppose. The interiors of both cars are essentially the same. The Ti is a nice spec - doesn't exist in the GT, only Monza (Ireland) or Blackline (UK) or a Cloverleaf in the GT compare.

The 1.9 diesel engine's weakness is water pump failure, which wrecks the timing belt etc. The timing belt and water pump on that 147 Ti should have been changed at 72,000 miles at the very latest. Conservatively, the TB and water pump should be changed at four years, which would mean it should have been changed twice now.

I don't think the 1.9 is badly affected by DPF and EGR issues. In fact, if that car is an import, I am not even sure that it has a DPF. But it's not the engine you want for driving around town.
