Paris - 1 day - pop quiz

I'll be in Paris for the day with Mrs Zag this Sunday. We arrive into the Gare de l'Est in the early AM (0800 I think) and depart from Gare du Nord about 1800.

Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do in that sort of window? We will be leaving our bags in left luggage so we won't have to drag them around behind us.

In terms of interests, we would veer towards museums, architecture & history stuff rather than shops or shows. There is scope to get the metro to somewhere within the timeframe, but if we can do something that doesn't involve hours in a queue (Eiffel Tower, I'm looking at you), or an hour on a train (Versailles) then that would be awesome.

The Carnavalet museum - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnavalet_Museum - is on the list as a potential. If someone asked me the same about London I would recommend somewhere like the South Bank centre or the Imperial War Museum.

So, if you were in Paris for a couple of hours where would you go?

I had a similar 1 day free in Paris at the start of the year and I did one of those free walking tours. I highly recommend it. It's a great way to get a nice overview of the city given your tight schedule. It's purely tips based so if you think your tour guide did a good job you leave a nice tip.

the first thing I'd say is to drop the bags at Gare du nord rather than Gare de L'est.
It indeed isnt that far, but better to do the walk when you have time rather than having the rush later on. Theres also a few steps involved if you take the straightest way so better do that when not in a panic.
I've landed a few times to Gare de L'est and you can walk into town from there if you want. The area isnt the poshest about the station, but as you get closer you can divert by the Pompideu centre, nearby theres a nice market and from there youre only round the corner from the Louvre, which brings you to the Champs Elysee, on up to the arc de Triomphe and if youve still a little puff then maybe down to the river and along over to the Eifel Tower.
If somehow then you could get over to the Notre Dame cathedral and the area to the south of there (to the north is a kip IIRC), then its another good area to potter about and possibly get a bit of grub.
Everything food/drink wise by the Louvre/ Eifel Tower/ Champs Elysees is REALLY overpriced - so maybe bring a bottle of water and some nibblies from the shops up round gare de l'est/nord to stave off the hunger and thirst
