I have just had a Garda knock on all the doors of the house I am living in in Cabra data collecting/doing some really random survey, he was not in uniform but did have a badge, I safe to say did not take part but he still asked for my id and DOB and put it on the front of the booklet, wonder what the **** this is about, maybe address and tenant list for Irish Water is what I am thinking.

What does an Irish Garda badge look like?

He knocked on all the doors of the house?

You'd imagine after knocking on the door to the kitchen and a few of the bedrooms, he'd just move on

What does an Irish Garda badge look like?
It's a pint of guinness surrounded by 28 golden potatoes.

    That happened to me once.
I asked him what the reason was for and I was told it.

    Did you not ask him?

Why on earth would the cops be doing that? Are they doing the quarterly Household Surveys as well?

Wait a minute, that wasn't the wallet inspector

He said collecting data for his station super, just seemed very random to me tbh, don't like the garda as I am autistic and in the past have found their services for lack of a better term very lax.

He was probably investigating the recent robberies of correct punctuation marks.

Sounds like someone is gathering the names, addresses and DOB's of an apartment block to get some good old fashioned fraud going.

Not likely seeing as I am neither the Caught or Jailed Bandit, all seriousness thanks for the post about ringing the station.

If he did not respond with "I'll ask the questions!" then he is not a real guard:D

Would it be that difficult to just ask him why he wanted the information, instead of jumping to the conclusion that he was up to no good?

I did ask and I am a suspicious nut job so naturally I come here to the font of wisdom that is AH as is my right seeing as this isn't The Democratic People's Republic of Korea now is it?

Wallet inspector. They're trying to locate all the forged driving licenses and mis-allocated PPS numbers. You should cooperate immediately and fully, in the national interest.

Did you actually give him your id/dob??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭circadian

Are you obliged to give any information in this type of scenario? I'd have refused and asked for a letter from the super explaining why they wanted my details. Addressed to 'The Occupier' of course.

I wouldn't give info to a non-uniformed Garda who called out of the blue regardless of the badge they had.

Better than having his back door smashed in...

Nothing to do with Irish Water.

The Gardai will sometimes do this for security purposes - during Obama's visit, every building along any route that Obama was going to drive were required to fill out forms listing all of the employees in that building and their PPSNs, etc. Yes, they are legally allowed to demand this information, I forget what it's called, but it's something like a "Section 5 request" that they can obtain from a court.

In your case it's possible that the Gardai were tipped off to some illegal immigrants living in your building and were empowered by a court to go door-to-door collecting ID.

You say you did ask why he wanted the information - what was his response?

It is really good for business that you all seem to think this guy was the wallet inspector, he didn't get my pps number not sure about anyone else here don't really care to be honest just bothered it happened at all.

For some reason this reminds me of the "military intelligence" riff in Good Morning Vietnam.
