I don't know enough about films to give an indepth review but I love time travel movies and I thought this was great. Ethan Hawke was as great as always and Sarah Snook (never heard of her before) was top notch.

Just watching this now and was totally unaware of the time travel aspect.

    Might wanna spoiler that.

The life of a time-traveling Temporal Agent. On his final assignment, he must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.

    From IMDB.

Thought it was a given. Sorry.

What did you think it was about.................

And mentioning the whole premise of time travel is hardly spoiling it. Bit like saying there's dinosaurs in Jurassic Park is spoiling it.

The film's name is also a pretty big give-away regarding time travel tbf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭Heckler

Yup. Type Pre.... into google and you get hits for Predestination with references to time travel all over the place  Hardly a spolier occcasion. Its not like I gave away a big twist or such. Its being promoted as a time travel film ffs.

Watched this last night without hearing anything about it and only read the brief synopsis from IMDB.

Was pretty mind-bending and little bit hard to follow at times (I was also translating/explaining parts for someone as well) but overall was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended, and not just to fans of sci-fi/time travel movies etc.

The actress in it was indeed excellent, had never heard of or seen her before either.

Almost certain this movie was the result of a drunken, comical conversation in a bar about time travel.
So you get a sex change, travel back in time, bang yourself, get yourself pregnant, and then take the baby back in time so you're the baby.

    Definitely.
Also it was based on a short story, which no doubt was not meant to be elongated.

I understand the paradox element, as it's the title, and the whole religious aspect.
It would have been better as a 25 minute episode of The Twilight Zone or similar.

Really looking forward to watching this on VOD over the weekend. Was hoping to see it on a big screen but it seems that this will be going direct to disc over which is a shame as we see so little sci-fi get a wide release.

Did not like this one at all, thought Tilda Swinton was the 'female' character for a while.

    Watched it last night.

Its well shot ,has a good soundtrack ,and the acting is excellent but the paradox element is just too ludicrous and non nonsensical.
What was the whole point of the film apart from the fizzle bomber aspect which was just tacked on ?
There was a constant reference that this will help the agency and help bring about time travel but it was never explained.
Did the fact that Ethans Hawkes character was both his father and his mother aid him travel through time ?

How was the 'original' (first ever timeline version) created..?? I know it is the chicken and the egg (or the rooster), but baby - girl - girl becomes guy, girl + guy together = baby... it doesn't work. It's impossible.. how did the girl exist the 'first' time, when there was no father at that stage to impregnate??

That was the whole point of the character being unique at the job, They existed outside of time, they were a paradox.

watched it the other night and it's awful , love sci-fi and time travel . But this crap went out of its way to be different . Utter waste of time .

Watched this last night. I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn't the best film in the world and I wouldn't be recommending it to everyone but it was well acted and was shot well.
Kinda coped on quickly enough how the big reveal was panning out though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,443 ✭✭✭Bipolar Joe

By the time the reveal came around, I genuinely thought the audience was supposed to know it already. Not a very good movie. Some grand ideas, terribly executed. I had the whole film copped very, very quickly.

I liked this film. Thought the two leads were excellent, Sarah Snook in particular was very convincing. I'm looking forward to seeing her in other roles in the future. I enjoyed the absurdity of it and the reveal, though forseeable for a while, was cool. Some nice ideas explored and a satisfying conclusion without the loose ends common enough to time travel movies (obviously ignoring the chicken and egg situation). Its IMDB rating is just about right, I reckon.

I absolutely loved this film. I'm torn between this and The Grand Budapest Hotel as my favourite film of 2014. I'm a huge fan of time-travel movies, and this was great.

What does that even mean? It's a paradoxical time-travel movie, about a
    hermaphrodite]
    that is their
    own mother and father
, of course it's going to be different.

Seen this recently too. I do like my sci-fi and the fact that Ethan Hawke was also in it I decided to give it go. I found it rather boring. Not the worst movie I've ever seen but not one I'll be watching again any time soon 3/10 for me.

    I agree.

I immediately knew what they were doing and assumed that wasn't going to be the twist.

Yep. I thought it was too obvious/stupid..

Seems this is a marmite movie.
Because I am on the dislike/boring side, I can't understand the top reviews this seems to get everywhere.

I really enjoyed it. Watched it this evening. Girlfriend copped the twist quicker then me, I kinda just got lost into watching it and not really thinking ahead of what was happening at any moment, so the reveals came as really big jaw dropping moments.

Feel I get the film, and that is raises a lot of questions which I love about films like this.

    +1
Just finished it now and like yourself I just got caught up in the story without thinking about it from a fourth wall perspective.
I guessed that he was the Bomber just after he drops "himself" off but the final reveal caught me by surprise alright.

Well I loved this, I had kept putting off watching it but now I'm sorry I didn't watch it sooner.
A completely mad premise but the directors just about hold it together.

A few things which didn't make sense:
She was a top academic & very athletic, how did she end up then only working as a home help & line chef for a pittance with her qualifications & abilities ?.
The surgeon in the present was able to repair his burnt face perfectly yet could do nothing about the hysterectomy & mastectomy scars left behind from the gender reassignment surgery, seemed odd.
Predestination means that retired John will become the Fizzle bomber, no matter what he does to avoid it yet we are led to believe that cycle is now broken as they catch him in the laundromat, does this mean that unmarried mother John never gets burnt as there is no future bomb in March 1975 ?. So things are not predestined after all.

Hawke is going through a bit of a comeback of late & this ads nicely to it.
    Overall, 8.5/10

I thought it was an OK film, well worth a watch, anybody else notice the line early in the movie
Which came first, chicken or the egg, ever think about that?

    Yeah, and also
the jukebox guy in the bar playing "I'm my Own Grand Pa."

The movie really batters you over the head with the twist before the reveal. Very forced attempts at the look-back-and-say-oh-yeah concept.

Cannot believe how good the reviews are for this. The movie is utterly moronic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I really enjoyed it. Didn't have a clue what it was about when I sat down to watch it. Two leads were excellent, they really made the film to be honest.

Well worth a watch if you're interested in sci-fi/time travel.

well she got the hysterectomy & mastectomy surgery in 64, but didnt get the face fixed till 85, and she was working for the agency by that point, so had access to much better technology to fix her, she probably had all the scars and that removed also, but it wasnt shown,

the thing with the bomber i think is that its a self fulfilling prophecy john has to become the bomber in order for john to become john, and the date keeps changing cause hes keeps changing the plan so to avoid his younger self catching him,

brilliant film, not what i expected at all, i was actually thinking it was the wrong film cause the bar scene where jane is explaining her life went on for so long, but i must say i thoroughly enjoyed it,

Saw this recently and anyone who is a fan of time travelling agent capers is in for a treat (and who isnt?). Except this one has a heart and great acting, Sarah Shook in particular is brilliant.

Like most time travel films your mind will be frazzled trying to work things out. And even if you do figure it out (and many things are sign-posted) it will still warrant a second viewing based on how amazing Sarah's performance is and Ethan is as reliable as ever. The outdoor scenes also look very well and it possesses one of the best scores Ive heard in quite awhile.

Isnt this getting a full cinema release in the UK in mid February? So Im assuming the same date here.

It holds an 80% rating on RT
Critics Consensus: Fun genre fare with uncommon intelligence, Predestination serves as a better-than-average sci-fi adventure -- and offers a starmaking turn from Sarah Snook.

80% sounds about right as Id give it 7 and a half to 8/10

    Recommended.

Saw this recently and it was great. Think I've posted a comment elsewhere but I intend to go see it when it gets a release here. Four to four and a half stars out of five I'd give it.

I really enjoyed this movie. Very unusual plot. There was a lot that could have gone wrong in trying to make a film like that but I thought it was really well put together. 8/10
