    can someone provide a worked example of the answer to this question?

    If the nearest neighbour distance is 2 angstrom then calculate the volumes of the unit cells in hcp and sc structures.

    could someone explain it with real basic language?

    I'm really lost. Thanks!

    Simple cubed is fairly simple and you should be able to work it out yourself.

    HCP is a bit more tough but there is a formula for calculating the volume of the cell. In that formula a is the distance between the two nearest neighbors while c is the height of the cell. There is a formula relating the length of a wrt the length of c.

    V=a^3 (standard volume formula). Without going to much into it-will let you work it, find the number of atoms for the simple cell (sc) structure and the same for the body centered cubic structure, (hint corner/ faces). The reason I told you look at the atoms as having a look at the structure you can figure out the length. Once you know that you can find the length then cube the area. I may have something wrong here as its been a while since done this but thats the gist!
