You can pick up a sim at the airport. All the major phone companies have kiosks in Arrivals in Bangkok.

I usually bring an old Nokia and put my Irish sim in it so that I can get texts from home. Then get a Thai sim with internet and some minutes. 1GB and 100 minutes is about €15. True Move has the best internet (but none of them are particularly fast).

If you don't have an old phone handy you should be able to pick one up cheap over there and they'll set it up with a sim.

Yeah good advice, last time I was in Thailand I got a DTAC sim in Bangkok Airport and popped it into my unlocked iPhone. You can top-up easily in 7-11 which are everywhere in Thailand. I have around 15 different sim cards from everywhere around the world in my collection, if anyone ever arrests me they will think I'm some guy like Nidge or else a spy secret agent haha. Always disable data and switch your smart phone to GPRS so as to avoid any huge shocks when your roaming abroad also but you can still receive texts from home for free. I use What's App and Viber when I'm abroad on a free wifi hotspot and Skype also if I have a good connection.

Spending money to stay in contact is almost unnecessary now with smart phones, my parents have no technical ability whatsoever so I last time I traveled I just topped up Skype with €10 credit and then used Skype to phone home to our Irish landline at home. I would then get them to turn on the pc at home and Skype them for free even having to use TeamViewer to remotely answer my own call and shutoff the computer afterwards so bad is their computer skills haha. I find an iPad to be the best tool I ever took abroad with me, very small and fits into hotel safes easily too. This is important in Thailand where theft is a big problem, best use a cheap Samsung or Nokia phone than flashing around an iPhone 6 worth several months wages to your average Thai because it will get stolen if your not careful, get good travel insurance or separate Mobile cover if going traveling with a premium smartphone. Having been there before I know as I have been on three separate visits before over the last few years.
