Wondering about options for internet in the Blackwater Valley. Fixed line not an option where I am.

No keen on satellite option due to high install costs and monthly charges. Wondering about fixed wireless.

    Any suggestions?

Fixed line should be unless you're off on your own.
There is a fixed line to the house but I'm 10km from Kenmare, where I assume the exchange is.

Ireland OffLine have an excellent map which you could use to see if there are any fixed wireless operators covering your area. Pop the marker over your house and check Wireless ISPs.

Thanks for that. It's good to satisfy myself about the options. However, the Blackwater Valley is barely covered at all.

It appears Twoway would be my only option. I have a Meteor dongle so I might be able to get by by getting in the car and trying to find a good spot for downloads and the like.

call and find your nearest telephone exchange

eircom will provide the slowest connection

voderphone or sky will provide faster using eircom line

standard ADSL can work up to 5.5km from the exchange. However, to get 8Mbit you would need to be located no further than 2km from the exchange. Similarly, ADSL2 can work up to 5.5km but you need to be no further than 1.5km to get 12Mb/s. ADSL2+ offers the best line speed (20Mb/s) up to 1Km from the exchange.

Blackwater bridge is the nearest exchange.....6km from me (wouldn't you know). Called Eircom earlier and they said that no broadband is available.

    Twoway or the dongle........

Check out conregs site viewer. You live in one of the worst communication blackspots in the country so you'll never have many options but you might find with a pole on the roof you could get accepable 3G throughput.

Ah here now. Eircom have no problem supplying my family or their neighbours with 1mbit broadband at 6.5 km, and that's by going the shortest route in a car. The line can handle more but eircom won't allow it. The limit was 5.5km back in 2006...

Just did. It shows all the mobile companies with masts at Capparoe which is close by but over the hill I think. I have O2 phone and Meteor Dongle and with both there is no signal in the house but some on the driveway (halfway up....but no further!)

When you check phone companies website coverage maps, I'm right on the edge of coverage.

Well, I called them with the previous owner's phone number and they said no broadband coverage. I left a messge for a Vodaphone callback and got none.

Previous owner left a Twoway modem in the attic. No school that I know of.

It does cover parts, but not much inland, and not me.
In general, vast areas, if not most of the valley have no coverage. I'm spoilt with fibre in Dublin too. Not sure I can get my head around going back in time by 15-20 years.

Actually just re-read your post. Any pointers for a good pole on the roof option...for the Meteor dongle.
