Baldonnel was treated to the 1st visit of a Boeing 767 this morning when Jordan Aviation 767 JY-JAG arrived to operate a troop flight to Beirut.

Here's a few pics for the record - although the weather was awful when it landed around 11:30

What is the length of the runway. I presume it did not take off with a full load and would have to had stop for a refuel some where.

Took off after 2pm for the return flight to Lebanon with no stops on the way...

Military flight, military passengers, no fees, no delays.

Runway 29 is the longest of there two runways at 6000ft. They have had a Globemaster land there in recent years aswell. My grandfather was on one of the original Globemasters which landed in Casement back in 1960 during the Congo airlift.

For a pilot's eye view of that approach, take a look at this. Starts around Dundrum, you can see Nutgrove Shopping Centre, National Basketball Arena, Tallaght etc on the way in to 29 in a 757.

Might be time to invest a little in the taxiways and ramp area so they can take larger aircraft and not need to park them on a runway.

Given the frequency of such large aircraft and the fact that they generally remain on the ground for a relatively short period of time it would be a waste of money.

Using vehicles to move troops/cargo from the runway to the ramp might not look pretty but it's practical in these instances.

There is no tangible benefit of parking such large aircraft on the ramp in my opinion.

Multiple benefits for a small cost. Not talking about a huge spend, a few million to widen one taxiway and add one stand. Stand could be used for multiple aircraft. I appreciate it won't happen but it's certainly something that should be looked at.

    Agreed.

It will remain a nice to have for the foreseeable future unless there are some additional large DF deployments overseas which would allow for more regular troop/re-supply flights. Otherwise it will only benefit the rare occasions such as visiting C-17s and the current troop rotations.

With the DF budget getting smaller and smaller it'll be interesting to see what/if any investment will be made within the Air Corps in the foreseeable future.

Perhaps the White Paper will be the cataylst, who knows!

Personally I don't think the investment will come. I mean, troop rotations are every 6 months, so there's not much need. We've had a 767 and a C-130 in, I'd say they need a longer runway rather than widened taxiways etc.
