Tiagra to Ultegra Crankset

Hey folks, quick query, I'm currently running an 8 speed Shimano 2300 set up, with Tiagra crank set on my winter bike. Its compac and I find myself spinning it out. One of the lads in the club has very kindly given me an Ultegra 10s crankset.

    - Will this crankset work with an 8 speed set up and chain?

    - Will i have to add links to the chain to accommodate the larger chain rings, and if so is it a set amount?

    Thanks

Spinning out when? Flat or downhills?
What is the smallest cog on your cassette?
What size is your big ring? 50 I guess.

It's a 50, wanting to do a bit of over gear training. Anyone know do I need more links in the chain and if so how many. Or will the chain set work at all?
