Uploads causing problems with the internet connection

Anytime I do any uploading there is a lot of timeouts on my internet connection. e.g. when I start pinging when there are no uploads everything is fine with ping times averaging 15ms and 1% packet loss but as soon as I start uploading, e.g. Google Drive uploads, average ping times increase to around 40ms and 40-50% packet loss. I am on e-Fibre. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm pretty sure my connection hasn't been this flaky up till recently.

What's your sync speed? If you are on say 30/10 then a cloud service could consume all of your upload, this would congest your own link and cause high latency. Rate limiting will to 50-80% of upload speed will prevent this.

Also bear in mind torrent seeding creates a lot of tcp control traffic that can make things worse again.

My sync speed is 40/10. Even if I just run a speedtest.net test while a ping is running, as soon as the upload speed test starts the timeouts start. Seems very unstable. Is it possible to configure the Eircom router to implement rate limiting?

The idea of the speed test is it runs half a dozen threads to saturate your connection and read tthe highest posible value. This will cause icmp drops as real traffic is prioritized over icmp. Its fine.

Dropbox/gDrive etc have a setting to rate limit. Put 500k in there and away you go.

I had that exact same problem earlier this year. I'm on a FWA connection and it turned out the CPE gear in my antennae was flaky - had been exposed to the elements for 5 years or so .

    Replacing that sorted it out.

Don't know what gear eFibre uses, but sounds like an Eircon support call to me.
