Thinking of moving from UPC to Eircom eFibre

I checked, eFibre is available in my address. I've been with UPC for about 7 years and have been very happy. But about 1 year ago we started having intermittent issues where it kept disconnecting.
A lot of the time it can be resolved by plugging it out and back in but it's frustrating as all hell.
I know that this may be due to the router being burnt out as its so old and we could have 8-12 devices connected depending.
I'm thinking of making the switch to Eircom for a while to give it a fresh start.
Is there anything I should be aware of?
Is there anything, like let's say websites ;) , that Eircom track or block that UPC do not?

You'll want to be aware of this then:

If the router is a cisco strap a fan to the top, that should stabilize it. If I was changing now id go vodafone as they're cheaper and aren't having congestion issues, but they have a 300gb limit.

It is the standard UPC cisco one alright. Someone i know suggested just getting a better router 1st and seeing if that resolves it

You can't avoid using a UPC supplied modem, though can bridge them (with varying levels of effort) and avoid some of their issues.

But if the modem is dying, it's worth asking UPC to replace it, as they'll most likely provide a newer model.

Careful! The new one won't be bridgeable and is still just as sh1t. Seriously, small 80mm fan fed from USB port on the cisco itself. Resolved all my stability issues both bridged and unbridged.

Now I'm even more confused. For the record the router is downstairs, main PC is upstairs, using TP Links to connect them

Troubleshooting UPC problems should always start with a direct ethernet connection. If you are using extenders/repeaters then you are susceptible to all kinds of other issues such as interference and bad wiring etc. So start at the beginning with a direct connection and take it from there.

The best Vdsl provider currently seems to be Vodafone. I would suggest you move to them for Vdsl over Eircom.

Unless, as already mentioned above, you download more than their fair usage limit of 300gb per month. eircom would be your only option in that case.

I could learn to stay within the 300GB fair usage policy tbh. Is there any way of checking how much you have downloaded a month across all devices, sorry to go off topic

Vodafone has a 300gb limit and if you go over it they will charge you lots. even on there Unlimited Package.

    Doesn't surprise me.

The fact that you could have as said 8 to 12 devices connected, no matter what provider you go with, i'd be looking at unlimited download allowance.

If DL caps are going to be a worry, go with Eircom. I'm on eFibre the last 11 months with Eircom and never had a bother. Some months close to 600 gigs were downloaded and they never said a word.

Eircom scrapped their FUP in May. It used to be 500GB.

I'm with Vodafone and yes, you can check your bill online and see where your at, how much you've used between billing cycles. It's handy.
I've 5 devices on average hanging off the router and never any issues. Copper to the house and fibre to the nearest cabinet ~ 300m away. My monthly average is about 50 to 60 gb per month, so I never tested the "unlimited " feature they advertise.

I used over 600GB some months when I was with Vodafone never had any trouble from them.

recently had vodafone and internet kept dropping even when connected to modem. sometimes restart didn't work. couldn't wait to be out of contract to be honest. could have been where I was located. maybe see if you can find someone near to you to see how they find it or other service providers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭jay93

To be honest it was the same for me when it worked I got 14Mb/s speeds on ADSL2+ but it dropped a lot randomly when I'd be doing something important too that's why I left them.

So UPC have informed me that they can replace my Cisco router with a Technicolour TC7900 one, is this a good thing?

As I've said it's generally works with a plug out and back in (but thats frustrating when online gaming or streaming movies) and UPC said they couldn't find any fault with my line....

So maybe try the new Router?

might be worth a shot. I would just clarify with them that you are not entering in to a new contract by getting a new modem (like when you get a new phone ) you don't want to end up stuck in another contract when you are already considering getting out. if you're not entering in to new contract then I can't think of anything wrong with trying a new modem
