Eircom Bandwidth Apocalypse (Updating live)

Well folks, as some Eircom customers may already know, download speeds have been steadily going to shít lately.

Eircom purchases upstream capacity directly from a Tier 1 provider called Level 3 (This is how you are able to skype with your loved ones in whatever godforesaken country they've been forced to emigrate to).

For over a month now, this Level 3 link (or links) has become more and more saturated. Of course, Eircom decided not to purchase additional capacity as things got worse and worse (as if rolling out 100 Megabit/s Efibre would have no effect on consumption whatsoever ).
Response to customer posts on recent broadband speeds queries - November Thursday 06 2014

    To our customers

We are aware that recently some customers have reported difficulties with video streaming and accessing content from some sites hosted externally to our network, such as YouTube.com for example.

This is due in part to the huge growth in data volumes and data traffic that is transported over our network, which has exceeded our forecasted growth.

We are making a number of improvements to our international connectivity which will add significant capacity and this work should be completed in the next two or three weeks.

Many of you posting to this forum on this issue will see improvements as this work has completed. If you continue to have speed and have followed all troubleshooting procedures, you should call our tech support team on 1890260 260.

We will keep you posted on this issue here but if you have any queries on this, or any other issue please feel free to post us on the forum here, contact us on Twitter @eircom or call you can also chat with one of our online Chat agents at Eircom.ie.

    Eircom Customer Care

Tonight, things have gotten considerably worse, with Eircom's INEX ports becoming congested.

    CURRENTLY AFFECTED SITES
    • Any sites using the Akamai CDN
      -including Vimeo.com and Facebook.com
    • Any INEX peer of Eircom
Internet Neutral Exchange (pretty much the biggest Irish exchange -i.e. HEAnet, Vodafone etc. connect with Eircom here)
    • All other sites upstream of Level3

    UNAFFECTED
    • Any peers of Eircom at LINX
-Eircom appears to have an unsaturated link to LINX (London Internet Exchange)
    • YouTube
-YouTube and Eircom appear to have scrambled to create a private peering in the last few days, avoiding a slowdown that users had begun noticing
    • Netflix
-Netflix appear to have had a private peering with Eircom from day 1.

You chose Eircom, you reap the, um, 'rewards'.

Change to another provider and stop whining.

Depends on which Akamai server actually provides you with the video. Eircom's routes to certain Akamai servers are congested.

There's already threads about this in both Broadband and Talk to Eircom in which Eircom reps have responded. What are you hoping to achieve by opening another in After Hours

I suppose you wouldn't have any motive in trying to keep this quiet no?

Ffs guys, there is no provider (or other business) anywhere comes out and is open about having problems, it's business. I've worked for a few different providers, none will ever admit to having a problem, even when it's blatantly obvious they have, they are all the same.

It has been shocking lately. I am supposed to be getting up to 7mb. The router is claiming 4mb (It is permanently stuck on the same number). When I do the speedtest it says 1.3mb.

I have been trying to redownload Microsoft Office for the last hour. I think I am at about 75%

In some places, Eircom is the only provider, so changing is not an option.

If eircom is still your only option at this point then you need to get off your hole and throw down some fibre or start a wireless ISP. Feck waiting around for someone else to do it

It's been kept on the down-low by Eircom. This is awareness raising, trying to get them to do their fúcking jobs for once.

If that offends you, I apologise sincerely.

I can just see the meeting now.

So Finton lets give customers an upgrade from 8Mbits to 80Mbits. Given all 99.9% of customers do is stream porn off Xvideos everything will be grand.

That's right Aoife, I don't know about you but I don't like my porn in High Def, it should have a bit of grain to it, gives it character.

Guy sat in corner: Err... guys, aren't we going to stream TV over IP, because if we give people RTE one they'll stop subscribing to to Sky? Because they're too stupid to put an Aerial up.

    Every one: Shut up Nerd!

    ...

Why that, I work with radio waves, not copper and not for Eircom. You still haven't answered the question on what you hope to achieve with this.

I've answered above, and seeing how you instantly went on the offence on the other thread, is it not a reasonable enquiry whether or not you have worked for Eircom in the past?

    No, never.

They've already responded and given you a timeframe for a fix, is that not good enough. Most other companies wouldn't

Why are people whining about the OP? It's only by bringing the glare of publicity on Eircom that they'll do something about the problem. Here we have a perfect opportunity to raise our concerns in a simple and effective manner, I suggest we all get on board and highlight the issue.

The mods should sticky this thread to draw attention to the situation. After all, boards.ie has a vested interest in a decent broadband speed.

Wow, sorry for trying to ensure an adequate service for paying customers. Next time I'll just shut up and obey meekly!

On a 15mb copper line here and Youtube is most definitely affected for me. Looking at the traffic monitor on my router I'm topping out at around 180Kb/s when streaming from the site.

As for Netflix I can't log in with any of my consoles (Code: ui-113) but the website and windows 8 app are at least working and streaming fine. Eircom has been bad over the last two weeks but today has taken it to an entirely different level.

How is opening a thread on AH going to get eircom to sort this out when everything else you have tried did not work? Have you tried having a mass said?

And what good does raising awareness do? Surely all those with this issue should already be aware of it?

Same here. I'm having trouble streaming at high def.

    That's bad for my connection.

bet the Eircom users want to smack us right now.

It's called public pressure, it's kind of the only way to get things done when it comes to big companies swiddling customers (refusing to buy more transit until customers actually noticed and it's too late). If more people know about it, more public pressure is applied to get them to solve the problem.

Eircom have continued with their eFibre rollout in the full knowledge that they can't support additional users.

Eh, this is after hours - not a soap box to lobby private companies.
Do you expect any non eircom customers here in after hours to get so angry about it that they will start picketing eircom offices?
No, its an issue between Eircom and their customers. There are already threads about it in the correct forums, so I still dont see the need for it here.

"Doesn't affect me so why should I care?"

A huge number of people are customers of Eircom. It's a current affairs topic. I'd recommend removing whatever it is that is stuck so tightly up your arse.

MOD: Right, well you got your rant out of the way, and since you're now just insulting people, there's no reason to keep the thread open.
