Late filing of income tax

I received an email from the revenue saying that I filed my income tax return late. I went to check the revenue website and found out that the date was 13th November, not 14th November as I had thought.

This is my second year doing my taxes and I assumed that the filing date was the same every year (it was 14th Nov last year).

The fee is €283.68. Just wondering is it worth explaining what happened to the revenue in hopes of getting the late fee waived or is there no wriggle room on the late fee?

Seems to have been an error.

Except that the OP appears to be saying he filed on the 14th not realising the deadline was 13th..!

Yeah, I filed late (on the 14th) as explained in the original post. Just wondering if I'd be wasting my time to try and explain it to them.

You could try, but it's called the deadline for a reason... if they make an exception for you they have to make it for everyone else who filed on the 14th.

Yeah, you're probably right, I wish the fine was a bit more reasonable though. Maybe 1% per day or something. €283 is over 5% of my total tax bill for being 16 hours late.

Isn't it supposed to be 5% exactly?

It probably is 5% exactly to be fair, was just doing some estimation in my head. Still though, seems a bit heavy, I guess it means I'll triple check the date next year.

Just soyou know the date legislation is 31 october anything beyond that is a concession from revenue.

In general, we still find that Revenue will remove the surcharge once for an otherwise compliant taxpayer.

Write, apologise, and point out your otherwise good record. It costs nothing except a few minutes of your time.

That would be great, should I write them a letter or will an email to rospayments@revenue.ie suffice?

I would always write to the Revenue District - and a proper letter, not an email. It's harder for letters to get lost or ignored.

I wrote a letter to the Revenue (Revenue House, Blackpool, Cork) on the 19th but have not received a reply yet. I also see that the full amount + late fee has been taken out of my bank account in the last few days.

Does this mean that the answer is no and I will not get the late fees back, or do they sometimes refund your account after they have debited it?

I'd say they simply haven't managed to get to your letter yet. Its barely a week since you sent it. If you're lucky enough to get agreement from them to remove the surcharge that can be refunded to your account.

Ring up your local tax office, you might fare out better and get it sorted quicker. ring in the morning time as I know my local office won't take calls in income tax in the afternoon as they are still processing returns.
BTW it was all over their website and the tv of the tax deadline date. It does change each year.
