My insurance is due for renewal soon and the question I struggle to answer every year is what its worth, I'd prefer to have a reasonably accurate figure instead of plucking one out of the air. Details below, valuations welcome :)

    €2800

2500 might be more on the mark

If it as good as it looks, I would estimate E 3,500. In reality, its worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Bear in mind they are a lovely car and very hard to get them over 30 years old. If I had it, E 3,950.

Thats a forecourt price matt. And I do believe you have a slight bias towards that particular marque.

A car should be insured for the amount that it would cost to source a replacement in the same condition, and this is a UK import, so check prices of similar ones in the UK, add the correct amount of VRT plus 10% for currency variations/import hassles/ferry etc and that's your figure.

    Nice car, BTW :)

The problem with this is he variability of UK prices! My 1275GT as a similar spec in the UK goes from anywhere between 3k - 15k!

Well, whatever about the spec, I can't believe that the 3k car would be in the same condition as the 15k one ;)

To be honest, one of the main reasons for variability is that while most people ask a reasonable price (with some wiggle room on top), there are also plenty of people asking too much for a given car and (every buyer's dream), a few who are asking too little! Also remember that asking prices in ads are not necessarily the prices paid in the transactions.

Either way, any variability should be ironed out by picking a figure at the upper end of the scale for your car - if you do need to source a replacement one, you don't want to be limited by having undervalued your car, and at this budget scale, the difference between cheap and expensive is not going to influence the premium by much.

What do you wish to accomplish? An agreed value with your insurance company? This is quite common on the continent , but is it even possible here? Did you talk to your insurance company / other companies?

Thanks folks, its insurance value should of course be the amount it would cost to replace it but as with the vast majority of "old" cars sourcing a comparable replacement and determining a price is the difficultly. There are many 190's for sale if you look, most are in the condition you'd expect for their age and worth very little, the good ones are more expensive (£3k to over £5k for a 2.0l) and are nearly all in the UK. There was an of '84 car similar to mine for sale in a dealership in Dublin recently for about €5k, http://www.classicandvintage.ie I think. Mine came from Cheshire Classic Benz and is nicer!

www.mtsv.co.uk also specialise in similar cars.

The only insurer that I could find that does an agreed value policy is Carol Nash, but they changed the policy conditions recently so that the car has to be garaged, mine isn't.

I'm going to pick a valuation figure of €5k, but I think I'll also contact some of the UK dealers and ask them to value it from a UK perspective, if I ever sell it I'd imagine it'd go back to the UK. At least I'd have some "expert" opinion to back up any potential argument with my insurance company.

AXA do agreed value if you ask them.

I reckon that 190 - if its as good as it looks, and probably is it it came from CCB - is worth €5000 every day and might even command a bit more as people realise just how good these cars are

Thanks for that info, I'll give AXA a call. Do you know if they require the car to be garaged?
