    Hi ,
Looking for advice here. Changing my 3 door Renault megane 2004 . Looking for petrol engine up to 2.0. Don't mind paying the tax . Budget is around 3000 . Must be ,

    - bullet proof reliability
    - under 100,000 miles
    - fit two baby seats in back
    - preferably nice to drive and look at

All town driving as it's a second family car. My gut is telling me 2004 - 2006 honda accord 2.0 petrol.
    Also 1.6 or 1.8 avensis 2006.

    Any opinions
    Thanks

Accord is the way to go IMO but you may have to extend your mileage limit slightly to get one within budget.

Honda would be my choice also. There are a good few of them to choose from. This one for example looks good, IMO.

    Audi a4 is bullet proof.

    Audi a4 is bullet proof.
Their engines are not in the same league as Honda engines, not economical either.

Is that just the petrol engines or are diesels the same?

Just sold my 2.0 tdi a4 sline a couple of months ago. Great car but think the accord would be more reliable.

The thread is about a petrol engined car, so yes, I mean petrol.

if you do long trips get diesel

I would drive your 2004 car a bit more a 2008 will not be much better

No long trips. Just used for town driving. I have two children so back doors would be handy even though it will be our 2nd car so children would rarely be in it.
My reasoning is that an accord is cheap due to high tax scaring many buyers away. It will be much more reliable than the megane, nicer to drive, more practical and nicer to look at. Is there an argument for keeping the megane ?

Unfortunely I can't post like but there are a few accords with low milage on DD for around 3000. Anything I should look out for when buying ?

Opinions on this. Last documented service history was September 2008 !!!!!

Look (and test drive) at the mazda 6 also. Generally cheaper than the Accord and a really nice drive. The accord is a beast to drive around town

Hi All, Going to view this tonight. The cars last service with Honda garage was September 2012 @ 82780 miles. The owner was a doctor and left Ireland to go back to India. The seller is selling on her behalf. The car has 83,600 miles on the clock now. Seller is very honest and said the car is in good shape but has done very little if any driving in the last year. Tax is out since April 2013 but it was NCT last Sunday ( 2 days ago).
I rang Honda garage and they confirmed the above. The mechanic at the honda garage reckons that a change of oil and filters is all that will be needed. He said if it passed the NCT the cat should be fine. What do ye think. Here is the link.

what about an Opel Vectra okmybe not the most exciting car in the world but they should be avalible fairly cheaply now and they were a good car. Might even get the revamped model which did look good I thought. Or for something a bit different what about a Suburu Legacy a very reliable well built safe car and AWD too.
You could look at the Nissan Primera too a good looking car, reliable and should be fairly cheap now too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    Hi all,

Agreed to buy the accord last night. Full service history at 2 honda garages. Only thing that I wasn't sure about was that the clutch pedal is a little worn (about a third of it). Would this be possible at 83000 miles. Seems good otherwise.
Thanks for all the help. P

Saw that the Accord was re-advertised, was there any issues with the car itself ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭pajosjunkbox

No issues. Accord seemed genuine. Decided that I didn't need another big car so went for the civic. Better mpg and suits my needs better . Think I'm a honda fan now !

Ha ha. Definitely a time waster ! Although I did actually have a bank draft in my pocket with sellers name on it. He had no problem with the change of mind.

Civic is 06 1.8 hatchback. Lovely car .
