I started back in the gym last week and have been following the Starting Strength program. I used this earlier on this year and really noticed a difference in my strength on the field.

I'm just concerned whether doing this will mean too much gain and inevitably effect my speed and flexability? I plan on doing this until January and maybe changing it up and bring more focus on acceleration and speed. Any advice?

It will make you faster. You use the muscles in your legs to run.

You can work on your flexibility all the time. Stretch pre-workout. Check out Defranco's Limber 11.

I didn't do SS but strength training made a huge positive difference to me on the pitch, albeit sawker. Those things you worried about it affecting negatively....they've improved immensely.

That's good to know, I'll just stick with it so until pre season then when we will be doing S&C with the team.

I've a friend who subbed in front squats 2 times a week. Makes sense to me. More core stabilisation. I haven't read the study but I've read about a study of australian rugby players, the players with the highest front squat were the fastest. Front squat better for lower body mobility in my opinion, easier to get into position, and easier to maintain during the season.
