Certainly not normal. Looks like it gave way along the rim wear indicator groove. How old is the wheel? What pressure did you pump the tyre to? I'm, slightly concerned now, looks like an FSA Vision Team 30 wheel, I have the same wheelset.

Happened to my girlfriends father. Cant remember what make tube/tyre. He does serious mileage so would imagine both were well worn and at the limit of pressure. It blew while he was pumping it. It deafened him for a few weeks on one side. He had to go to the eye and ear and they said he may never recover his hearing fully. Always turn away when pumping now just in case

Happened to me on the front rim a couple of years ago. Turned out it was well worn from constant braking. Interestingly for about a week before it happened I could feel a slight bump and vibration whenever I pulled the front brake but couldn't identify it. I now know all about worn rims so check them regularly.

It happened to me when cycling so a loud bang and lots of sparks but the road was dry and I wasn't going that fast.

I have also found that running a cloth over the brake pads every now and then seems to have extended my rim life considerably.

Was that 12000km of city commuting with lots of braking or thousands of country kms without touching the brakes at all?

It seems to matter what pads you use also. I've worn out a number of rims using cheap black pads but have switched to Koolstop Salmon pads which seem to be much kinder to rims...

A tyre/tube blowout is fairly common but in the OP's case it was the wheel rim which gave way - nothing to do with the condition of the tyre/tube.

strangely enough the tyre is fine
the tube and wheel on the other hand are fit for the bin

ill strip the wheel down and keep all the parts
id a lot of trouble getting the spokes when I had to replace one before so they will come in handy as I have another set of the same wheel

The pressurised air took the path of least resistance - i.e. the rim, hence why the tyre is fine.

PS- did the rim have a wear indicator?

after a closer inspection and comparing to another wheel the same ,it does have a wear indicator ,(learns something new) it was on its way out definitely.
thought id of got more than just over a year on a set of wheels
