Have been trawling the net this morning looking at car rental options BUT I only have a Visa Debit card - I don't have a standard CC & and cant find anywhere that will take VISA Debit.

Dublin South/City Centre if anyone has any ideas?

    Have you tried Enterprise?

    Hi Marley,

You should be able to book with Hertz, using Visa Debit. You will probably have to take the extra insurance to cover the excess, unless you have the funds in your account to cover same (€2k ?).

I have rented from them before using Visa Debit.

    Thanks,

    MC

...rented a car in UK recently, and if using DC they take a big security deposit against it, refunding when you return. This because they can't -pre-authorise a charge like they do on CC.

Same as this. Used debit card only last week. Had to take out the extra cover (€20) in order to bring excess down from 3,000 to 250.

There was a hold of ~500 euro (excess + fuel deposit + actual charge) on the card for about 4 days after I returned the rental. Then only the actual charge was deducted from my account and the hold was released.

Went to book a car with Hertz today and they have stopped taking debit cards to pay for the excess. It cost me an extra €22 per day insurance on top of the car rental costs as I do not have a credit card. Prior to this change in policy I had separate car hire insurance to cover the excess with carhire excess.ie .
So anyone previously using a debit card with Hertz car rental, take note, they no longer accepted, I was told the same goes for Budget the only other rental car company that also used to accept debit cards.
