Upc Broadband- Alternatives?

We're having terrible problems with our Upc broadband. It either keeps crashing, it went off yesterday and is still not back on, or else we're getting really bad download speeds, sometimes as low as .75mbs.

I've called them at least 15 times over the past 2 months and each time they do a quick fix, including factory resets but nothing improves.

An engineer is calling to us later today and while hopeful this might solve the problem I'm not over confident.

We've just started into our second year with them so our initial 12 month contract is up.

My question is: if we ditch UPC, what are the best alternatives? We currently have our phone and bb with them, as out tv is with Sky

Well first of all, I'd recommend to wait to see if the engineer visit will fix it. What you are experiencing certainly isn't normal for most UPC users, sounds like you have a dodgy router or damage to the cables in or entering your house.

If the engineer visit doesn't work, then you should check if Eircoms eFibre is available in your home.

eFibre works via VDSL over a telephone line and can give you "up to" 100mb/s depending how far you are from the cab. You can check if it is available by pointing either your phone number (if you still have an Eircom phone line) or address into the line checker on the Eircom website and also it will tell you what speed to expect to get.

Now if Eircom eFibre is available, you don't have to buy it from Eircom, you can, Vodafone, Digiweb and Magnet all also resell Eircoms eFibre and in particular in Vodafones case are cheaper then Eircom.

If eFibre isn't available, I won't recommend anything else (ADSL, Sky, etc.), I'd keep hassling UPC to fix it.
