    Hi all,

Was browsing Amazon looking for a good set of sockets for minor repairs & service on car & Land Cruiser jeep.
The Draper Expert 71244 71 piece @ £60.00 sterling + delivery caught my eye - are they worth it ?? (I'm unable to provide a link) Is Draper a good brand ?
Any opinions on the brands Bacho, Mannesmann & Rolson
Would welcome your recommendations on a good set at a reasonable price.
    Thanks all.
    M.

Draper would be a very good make, however itf its just for DIy work , i think this 70 piece set from Halfords would represent better value http://www.halfords.ie/motoring/garage-equipment/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-professional-90-piece-socket-set

If you are an AXA customer or know someone who is you'll a discount of it too. The halfords pro range is very good for home use, i bought the 200 piece kit oa few years ago and it's never let me down.

I have a Draper set something similar to the Halfords one. For home use I cant fault it.

Me too and I have it over 15yrs.

Although where I work Draper stuff is not allowed, go figure!

The ratchet looks a little small for doing any work requiring a lot of leaverage but you could get a breaker bar to supplement it. Quality looks great according to the reviews, I am tempted to get one myself.

You probably know already OP but it's currently reduced from £154.51 to £59.95

Don't mess around , pay the extra and get the 200 piece Halfords advanced set. It is on offer at the moment and I got 10% off with Axa card. Its a fantastic set and should last a lifetime. Even the box is warranted for life.

I have the above set for the last 4 years and it has been excellent. Its on sale at the moment for €125, but you get 3 ratchet sizes, plus sockets from 4mm up to 32mm, with their imperial counterparts.

(Aha yes, I hear you say, but I have no need of imperial sockets, and so thought I until this very weekend when I discovered big ignorant 23mm bolts on the front caliper of my missus' xtrail. How sad was I to discover my sockets
went straight from 22 to 24mm. How happy was I to be able to reach for a 7/8ths" socket and open those ****ers)

All messing aside its a great set, and always gets great reviews, not just here but all ovr the interweb

I paid a few quid more and got Teng stuff, much better feel from it IMO.

I have the 200 piece halfords set as well and can't fault it at all. I've used it on everything from brakes on a push bike to a couple of clutches on cars over the past 6/7 years.
Only down fall was the clips on the box, there just hanging in there but still working all the same.

I believe I have read on more than one occasion that Halfords sockets are Draper with the Halfords badge on em. For goodness sake if buying Halfrauds do buy them when on sale at half price as they do be quite regularly

How much would the equivelant 200 piece Teng set cost?

    Pretty certain they're not Draper

Slowly moving over to Teng 1/2" drive sockets myself. Have a 3/8"th set a couple of years, and its just super quality. Have been using mainly King Dick sockets I bought back in the mid 80's.

I do a bit of farming, and when putting up high tensile fence wire, the way the Teng pliers cut it is without equal.

OP, Bacho were a great brand, 50 years ago when their stuff was all made in Sweden. Now mainly produced in Argentina, and personally I don't think its near as good.

    Mannesmann, never head of it.
Rolson, the mainstay of car boot sales and travelling salesmen the country over. Very often cheaper sockets and wrenches are thicker in the wall to make up for the weaker steel, and this can be a problem where the nut you are loosening is close to an obstacle .

I got a Jefferson set as a gift over 3 years ago and I've found it to be excellent. They're an American brand but are imported by a crowd in the north. This is the set I have.

If you take the ratchet spanners, they're identical to gear wrench (a danaher brand) ones. Ratchets are also the same.

I got the lidl set. Quality is pretty decent. Some nice extra little bits in it too. Spark plugs sockets, torx sockets, spline bits and a very good selection or 1/4 and 3/8 size hex bits. Haven't had any problem with it the few years I have it. Gets a fair bit of use/abuse too. Feels like a bit better quality than the halfords set my mate has. Spanners aren't great though. I replaced the 10 12 13 and 17 with teng ones. 1/4 inch drive ratchet is only begin to loosen up but it done decent mileage at this stage. Use far more than the other two put together. Will upgrade it for christmas maybe :). Case is half decent too.
