i suspect im one in a long line asking advise on here in this vein but here goes anyway....

I'm due an upgrade soon( with 3 currently and am happy out)

    normal monthly bill circa €42

have zero interest in Apple or Windows phones.

Currently have a Galaxy S3 which is starting to show its age getting slow etc.

My previous 2 phones were Samsung but i've had LG smartphones too.

I do like Samsung but am not a fanboy so am totally open to all makes.

Like the look/idea/size of the new Note but at the same time am a little unsure of such a large phone.

I'm not a tech head so have no use for something suited for someone looking to take over the world from the palm of their hand.

I use my phone mainly as; a phone and text device, all aspects of internet surfing, watching nextflix, playing games, taking photos etc.

    What would you recommend please?

I think you're getting ripped off paying that much per month, on both the tariff and insurance.

Check that insurance figure. €14 pw seems ridiculous. You'd be better off putting it into a savings account and you'll have 730€ in a year for a new device.

Ignore the ins end of it.

my tariff incl unlimited data and free calls and txts. I thought that was good tbh. I would easily spend more on credit

PAYG should be ~€20 pm for unlimited/5 gb data.

The rest covers the cost of the phone. Worth looking at in detail IMHO.

PAYG on 3 gives you unlimited date (no cap, btw) but the €20 top up will only give you about 57 minutes of call time. So if you use your phone for calls PAYG isn't really the best choice. The Flexmax Classic plan (sim free (€20.33 per month, no contract) gives you unlimited data +350 units, So say, 200 minutes and 300 texts, or 100 texts and 300 minutes, or whatever combination you want really (unit -= 1 minute or 2 texts).

That said, OP probably doesn't want to be forking out circa €500 per month for a new phone, so a 24 month contract (so no upfront fee for the phone) might be their best option.

Tis all swings and roundabouts really.

Tesco has unlimited calls and texts and 1gig of data for €15pm (or €20 with 5 gigs).

48 has similar offers. Meteor has unlimited everything for €30pm.

It's always worth shopping around for everything IMHO, very few companies reward loyalty these days.

Never liked the build quality of Samsung phones so I would opt for HTC M8 (had the M7) the build quality is top notch and their HTC Sense has some nice features. If you listen to music or videos on your phone the M8 has some great speakers.

I am currently using OPPO Find 7a and this was a step up size-wise from the M7 it didn't take long to get used to the extra size and having the bigger screen is pretty sweat (will be changing to the even bigger Nexus 6 when I can get one).

If you are a keen phone-photographer, or at the very least want to get the most out your shots, then not many android devices will rival the Note 4, especially with the new OIS feature. I am not a Samsung fanboy either, but any issues I have elsewhere pale in comparison to the the undeniable quality of the shooter.
This will be my phone for the next two years, and I see you said you're apprehensive of the larger form factor of the Note, but IMO, this is generally over exaggerated and and something you quickly get used to, and the benefits are great for video playback/surfing/gaming... Having owned a Note 2 for a couple of years, a lot of friends have been intrigued to have a go with it and the majority of them really dug it. The Note 4 is definitely a much better phone in the hand than the Note 2 as well BTW.

That said, if top notch quality from the camera is not a dealbreaker for you, then the HTC One M8 is the obvious front runner IMO - it's camera isn't terrible and handles really well in low light compared to a lot of the competition, but detail is massively compromised in bright light. If HTC overhauled their approach to their camera, I would go with one, simple as that, it is such a smooth device, top quality build/design, and a cool take on android with Sense. (I took an age to settle on either the M7 or the Note 2 last time round, HTC phone have been king, design-wise, since the M7)

One Plus One will not be an option without paying outright for the phone, no Irish carriers will stock it, so not a contract option. If you can spring for one, then do a little research on that device, you'll be glad you did.

The Sony Xperia Z3 is another one worth considering, worth a look at, and although I did not go with one in the end, it's a strong offering indeed.

I have no experience at all with the Motorola Moto X line, but its stock Android on an affordable device with not very many corners cut...so you can't go wrong with them, by all accounts.
