Were you driving it long before putting oil in it? Sounds like damage to the bottom end(but I stand corrected) if it is, its a pricey job to fix.

Could be any number of things but all would be a fairly major, and expensive repair.

Sounds like a bit of damage was done but noone can fully outline what's wrong with it over the this. Obvious thing to do is bring it to a mechanic tomorrow and he'll tell you. Sounds alot like a bottom end gone but again Im not 100%,

    Engine is Banjaxed.

That's what I'm thinking maybe better to just start looking for a new car than spending money on fixing this, how long before engine pack's in could it keep on driving for a week or two, don't do much mileage just the about 10 or 15 mile most days

Honestly, it probably would be best to scrap it .It could keep going for a while but it's going to just stop dead one day.

Known to use oil. Id keep topping up and drive on. Be sure to save for replacement. You probably have tax and nct on it. That has value that will be lost if you dont keep going.

    Engine's ****ed. Simple as.

In theory, you could rebuild it, but you're better off getting a replacement engine if you want to keep the car. If there's crank damage, it's a matter of time before it finally lets go and throws a rod.

    >> or would it be a cheap fix,<<...how on earth could it possibly be a cheap fix ? ..your mechanical knowledge is very limited i think .

Zetec? they don't like that..prepare for the worst :-(

Rattle is probably from the shells on the big end (ooh err missus) of the pistons. They will have been worn due to lack of oil, they are made of a softer material than the pistons themselves.

Sump off to have a look and the crankshaft/piston big ends.

Unfortunately it is hard to gauge exactly how much damage has been done to other parts of the engine due to oil starvation too....

Given the level of mileage on the engine already I wouldn't be too optimistic about it being financially worthwhile to rescue...

Best option if you want to keep the car is to pick up a secondhand engine.

How much oil did you put in exactly to get it back up to level again?
    1 liter? 3 litre?

For that year I'd let a mech listen to it and see what they say - but probaly just keep driving until it's shot and then buy another car. But that's me.

    What's she worth?
    Lads,

I have an old 2000 (red) ford focus laying up in the garden the last few months. The exhaust is blowing, rad is leaking and I think she needs a new steering rack.

    no tax or nct

would I be better off scrapping it or putting it up for sale? what's it worth to scrap?

    Thanks

too much oil is as bad as no oil. keep dipping the engine until the right level is reached
