Could you advise if trademan get any discounts in stores like inhouse, hafele, cashandcarry? Need to get worktops and bits and pieces for my renovated kitchen and wondering if getting them throuhg him would make it cheaper. When i first employed him he was saying he would( esp worktops cost a fortune) but looks like the quote they gave him was exactly same as the one i got..

If they go to the same place a good bit they might be able to get a little bit off but not much. We might give 10% but only if they were coming in a couple of times a month for a while.

Thanks for all replies. Looks like he just wanted to get the job while he promised the discount as now he is only saying he might be able get 10% at most if even.. Feeling very annoyed

Out of interest, what kind of discount did he indicate he would be giving you ? He was never going to get better than 10% from general supplier.

Margins on DIY products can be pretty tight if they suggested they can get more than 10% off sounds like they were just trying to get you to give them the job alright.

A lot of tradesmen will charge you the retail price. The discount is theirs not the customer.

Where it should work out cheaper is he'll pay 23% vat & only charge you 13 & half %vat because vat on a service is the lower rate. If it is a cash job then he is breaking the law. You can't expect any favours if he is breaking the law.

This case is different only because he promised you the discount.

I'd say this was where he was getting the 10% discount from. IIRC if a they supply and fit it's 13% VAT for the job, if they supply they have to charge 23& VAT
