    Hi
Just drove 1 mile and car just started sputtering/bad acceleration and flashing engine light

The car is a 1.4 toyota Corolla with 107,000 miles, has a loud exhaust but now sounds like a subruas exhaust would sound

I looked it up online and i thinks it's a misfire. Would a spark plug cause this? Hopefully ?
Am I looking at big money to fix it, or any suggestions/opinions.

I will not drive it as I know a flashing engine light is serious. ThanKs :(

    Flashing EML is a misfire.

Check your ignition leads first. Then your ignition coils/sparkplugs. Then you might want to make sure the engine's actually building compressions.

    Don't panic just yet.
Take car to a mechanic to get fault codes read.

hope it's not due to petrol stretching . I am in west cork so I don't think I'm in the worst part of the country for bad petrol but who knows . If it is to do with streched petrol, how do people go about fixing their car ? Cheers

In simple terms, it seems to involve a new short engine or new pistons and rings, crank bearings, etc and a full clean of the valves and head.

I have a 00 1.4 vvti with 135000 on the clock and I noticed the same problem today. Sputtering, Kangaroo-ing and a general lack of power. I had a look tonight and I thought it might be oil burning but I have had the car a few months now and not noticed anything bad on the oil.
I have been getting my petrol in the same garage every Thursday since the start of September. Interesting!!!!

Two of them in short order?

Has Toyota inclused a 'new-car incentive mode' in the ECU?
