Abandoned plane at knock?

Not sure if this is worthy of a thread of its own, but I wasn't sure where to post it.

Anyway, I was passing Knock airport last night, and to get into the nitty gritty for those of you who know the area, instead of taking the first left at the roundabout which brings you into the airport, I continued on (which would be parallel with the runway) and turned left, which just passes perpendicular by the bottom of the runway. There down on its own, just inside the boundary fence was a fairly big plane, which look abandoned. I'm useless at identifying planes, but it was plain (or plane :pac:) white. It wasn't any of the boeings or a330's used by aer lingus or Ryanair from what I could make out, seemed more compact. I was taken back by how close it was to a public road, just meters inside the security fence. Somebody said that it was damaged by the luggage loading equipment earlier in the year, but they weren't sure.

Any of ye enthusiasts have any idea of why it's there, what type of plane it is or who it belongs to. How long is it there and is it going to be moved anytime soon?

There is a dismantling firm at NOC. I can check FII to see what they got recently

Maybe it's there for fire or rescue training?

Hey Noccy_Mondy, the aircraft you refer to is the body of ex YU-AON. parked right beside the fence and pure white. now used as fire fighting equipment.

Still looks in decent nick, was it used by a commercial airliner in the past?

That was only retired from use by Jat in February by the looks of things.

Most airports have a fire trainer knocking around, Dublin has an ex-Ryanair 737-200 and Shannon has an ex-Iberia 727.

How would that work? Would the airport authority have to buy the aircraft or would it be a case of "oh hey, you gonna throw that old plane out? Can we have it?" :p:o

Sligo had the old euro Celtic Fokker. Fuselage was perfect but the cockpit had 2 tide marks in it:D

Will I guess it's cheaper to get one than a disused aircraft, and it let's the firemen get into close confined area for training

    Disclaimer: complete guess

So it looks as if the purpose built fire training rig at Kerry Aiport (pics at the bottom of this page) is quite unique in Ireland. If I'm not mistaken they do now also have a helicopter shell sitting right next to it on the old runway.

Dublin Airport has a big fire rig like this. Burning old aircraft for fire training is a thing of the past. they keep old wrecks for the firecrews to practise extractions of casualties.

Strange to see the old ryanair 'Eircell' plane parked there as I flew on it many times out of Stansted. They also had a lovely 'Jaguar' one with leather seats, wonder what happened to that.

Utterly bolloxed leather seats, as I found sitting in one that wouldn't stay upright for an entire flight - fully booked so couldn't move.

Long since chopped and used in part as a flight sim.
