    Yes.
No, once the time changes we revert to an annoying 12 hole competition with placing and 2/3 handicap but to really turn the screw the entry fee is the same €6 which I think is far too expensive for 12 holes and a real incentive to stay in bed.

Winter golf can be good and I've played in all sorts of weathers but generally don't play much competitions as the competitive edge versus handicap isn't the same with placing and forward tees making the scoring even more ridiculous.

Last weekend's 12 hole competitions required 30pts to win which I think is beyond my capabilities with only 2/3 handicap. It's time for a lesson and some range/practice time to try and sort out my terrible iron shots.

    Jaysus - with 2/3 handicap a bloke got 30 - lol

That is a regular score over 18 with full handicap for some (me) lads :D:eek::D

Weekend comps are now 14 hole so not counting but the Wednesday open was counting this week and the plan is for it to continue as long as weather permits.

Yeah ended last weekend, was hoping the weather would hold up for this weekend but after all the rain today, I'd say there's no chance.
But at least its 18 holes all winter but might be 2/3 temp greens when the course it soaked.

Still counting comps off the front tees in my club this week.

Will be interesting to see if Corballis qualifying in am - you are placing on fairway ?

I'm beginning to think most sane men would take 2 months out at this time - hit range, work on swing.

I did that today - went to course - was mental out. So turned around went to range.

Really cannot see how if any sort of placing is in play that it can be counting.

Placing on the fairway "only" is more than likely going to be counting/qualifying.

That line is in my head - well out there was placing last 3 times and was counting - one lad got a cut - I got a .1 - so .

But out there everything is different.

No, in general it should be qualifying if it's placing on the fairways only.

It's when relief is given in the rough etc that it's non qualifying. The thinking behind it afaik that there is no material difference (advantage) between a low and high HC if there's placing on the fairway.
But as the high HC will probably be finding the rough more than a Low HC, then the high HC is getting an unfair advantage over low HC.

Will wait and see - could be even casual water in am - this will be a real test to see can links hold out to these conditions.

Golf season finishes early in our gaffe, since the 3rd week in september till now we have had only 2 18 hole singles qualifiers, the next one is the last weekend in March 2 x 18 hole singles comps in over 6 months is frustrating when other clubs not to far away start back 18 hole comps on the 1st weekend in Feb and had their last singles qualifier last week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

So whilst we talk about year round golf in Ireland .

For the majority - qualifying golf is only 6 months long for most.

Just had a look on how did i do results for our club had about 30 x 18 hole single qualifiers for the whole year 2014 (including an open week) with the majority of the comps run over 3 days.

Still playing full competitions of the back sticks with no limitations in place in Kilkeel. Ends next weekend.

Winter league started last week in Athy 13 holes €6. Didnt even get .1 back this year and I worked so hard!! really frustrating.

Anyway have changed pro's and my new one guarantees to get my HC down even reckons he can get me to single figures over time! and if it doesn't drop he'll refund me! cant argue with that so here's to 2015! Lets have yea....

season finished in our place after bank holiday weekend just gone. into xmas league 14 holes now, little to be excited about. I think all comps should be non qualifying now, even on the links, as its too cold and the ball is not travelling as far. go out and enjoy the winter golf and don't worry about chasing cuts

But is that not part of the test ?

    I love winter qualifying.

Pretty much. Moving to some temp greens at the end of the month and a newhole using the putting green to replace a closed for winter 11th

Have to agree. The fact that the weather is colder, the wind stronger, the greens more receptive, just adds to the challenge. It's a different challenge to summer golf, but no less a challenge because of it.

my home club open weekend comps are counting, with place on fairway drop in rough. i dont think it should be allowed as people are just using it to get .1 back. and some just arent finishing it when they are on a good score and put the card in with the last 3 holes missing!

It shouldn't be , once you touch the ball in the rough it doesn't count as qualifying Afaik

13 hole competitions for Turkey and Winter League from last week onwards in Moate. As we are trying to rest a couple of greens in the wettest parts of the course over the winter I believe there is a different 13 holes being used this year so I am looking forward to seeing how that works out. As far as I know we are skipping 7,8,9 and playing 14,15,16 instead.

Great idea that, you need a few par 5's when playing 13 holes. Also saves you walking over the laneway out to the back 3 as well.

Hard to see many courses being opened this weekend on the east coast if the predicted rain arrives tomorrow and Friday. I was surprised my own course Athy was closed last Saturday and would imagine its going to be a nailed on cert to be shut this weekend

Managed to win two 14 hole 4balls for Turkey's in Wexford over the last few weeks. I now have an effective shot on the weekends and on a Wednesday. It's all 4balls here for the winter. If I manage to sneak another I'll have another effective shot and so on. What way is a winter league played lads. it sounds good.

@Dero I think Athy be ok this weekend since the rain has stopped till Monday. Great course for the drainage! so hopefully I'll get my golf fix in :)

We changed this year and counting comps are going to be run over the whole winter. When you sign in, you get the option to either enter for a 12 hole non-counting or 18 hole counting. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out in Jan with SS probably about 3 or 4 shots over par.
