Tax credits, refundable if not working first part of the year?

    Hi,

I wasn't working from January - July and have been working from August this year. My tax credit on each payslip is €275 (3300 over 12), meaning my tax credit for the year will total 275*5 = 1375.

Is the rest of the tax credit refundable? Revenue seems to give me conflicting information:

http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/credits/ "Tax credits are non-refundable. However, any unused tax credits in a pay week or month are carried forward to subsequent pay period(s) within the tax year."

http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/paye/guide/employers-guide-paye-refunds.html "Revenue will make any refund of tax due to an employee who has become unemployed. The employee may apply for refund directly to Revenue on form P50 accompanied by parts 2 and 3 of their form P45."

Sounds like you are on a non cumulative or week 1/month 1 credits basis for some reason.

Check your payslip to see if it states week one (w1) or non cumulative. If so then you need to call Revenue to see why you are on this basis. One possible reason could be Revenue are missing some info for you or they are trying to account for any taxable jobseekers benefit you may have received this year.

Whatever is reason for that week1/month1 basis of your tax credits on your payslips, if you didn't have any other income this year, you will be liable to tax refund.
