Haven't bought from aliexpress before, would be interested to hear from others users who have. What was your experience like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

Delivery can be very hit and miss, can be 10 days, can be 60.
Buy from known sellers with good ratings and buy products with a lot of orders.

Don't buy from people with no ratings, be very careful buying technology.
Some clothes are in Asian sizes so buy a few sizes up, ask the seller before you buy.

Customs has to be paid on stuff over a certain amount, think its €25. DHL is more prone to be caught for customs than snailmail.
Depends how quick you want it.

Thats all i have to offer.

    What about payments?
Do they still refuse debit cards.

Stick to sellers with good ratings and you'll be fine. I've only ever bought tech from aliexpress and a few other gadgets and gizmos but once you know what your buying and are prepared to wait for delivery then it's great.

Nope, I paid using a debit card a couple of weeks ago.

It's actually €22, so anything more expensive is liable for customs.

I've bought a few times off this site and a lot of sellers will mark items as low cost gift on the customs form.
Clothes generally need to be a size or two bigger than you would normally but, but the sellers have been good with me.
    Highly recommended

Has anyone here ever gotten a good deal from this, like the mi4 or s4 for them prices?
Id say chances for us being able to buy them would be slim to none.

You've about a 0.00000001 change of getting anything decent at 50% off.
They only have max 10 units going at the sale price in general on the decent, expensive phones.
So its pure luck when they open for business id say, so unless you want to get up at about 3 in the morning for bidding, i wouldn't worry about getting any of the major phones for 50%.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,734 ✭✭✭zarquon

Use Aliexpress all the time. Just like ebay, stick to sellers with plenty of feedback. Items over €22 could be subject to customs although you can always ask the seller to mark as gift with low value.

Shipping can be hit or miss. Anywhere from 1 week courier to 5/6 weeks snail mail. Be aware that couriers will usually ensure customs duties are collected.

Also the first thing i do is sort by "orders" to bring the ones that have sold well to the top. Nearly guarantees that youll get a large amount of trustable reviews. Usually bought by shops etc for resale so quality should be good.

Have bought a few item recently. Very variable delivery time 15 to 65 days. Personally I wouldn't be ordering for Christmas delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭tomslick

In the last month delivery times are gone terrible. I order a good bit from Ali but you can't rely on delivery. I ordered a train for my sons birthday next week at the start of September. Still no sign. The other stuff ordered on the same transaction are arriving bit by bit very slowly. Not good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 727 ✭✭✭C.O.Y.B.I.B

Just got some bits from them today . Ordered on the 14th October .
Have a 2nd order from that date not yet arrived .

Thats definitely on the low end for an AE seller I got stuff today that I ordered on October 2nd and still waiting on some stuff from September 21st!

For people who haven't used it before yes it can take a long time but get purchase protection which you need to make sure doesn't run out if its nearing the last few days you can extend it that way you are covered. I have had a couple of things not show up and AE have been very quick about refunding they ring fence your funds until you confirm you have received the order or the protection times out and you obviously don't need to worry about AE running out of money any time soon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

If you ordered now, you'd most likely have it by Christmas, any later than next week and you'd be really chancing your luck.

Please also make sure you have used a Visa or MasterCard personal credit card to finish payment, because at present debit card or business card is unable to be supported. http://help.aliexpress.com/paymentfail.html

Thats just wrong I have only ever used a debit card for it and it has never been a problem.

I,ve been buying from aliexpress for a few years now and never had any problem,s with them , when buying always check sellers feedback and if buying andriod boxes , phones , satellite stuff , tablets , i,d use DHL or FEDEX, for these items delivery time 5 to 6 day,s max DHL sometimes hit you with 10 ,15 euro admin fees well for me they did had no problem,s with FEDEX like this and if your not sure about sellers ask well established members here for adivce.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,718 ✭✭✭upandcumming

Some of the items have been doubled in price so they can be marked down - check the feedback!

don't buy more then one item of the same seller unless it is a multiple. They will either send the wrong thing or only send one and claim when the original arrives that you receieved it,, they then have the tracking number to back their claim you receieved the item.

Aliexpress is made up from 1000s of sellers just like Ebay or Amazon so its pointless saying they all act the same.

I actually make it my business to buy other goods from the same shop so they all arrive together. Literally in years never had the problem so id say its a once off.

Usual rules apply. Dont buy something unless theres a few reviews saying they got theirs no problem.

Had problems with DX shipments of late too. First time in ~2yrs of ordering from them. I wouldnt be surprised if china post is backlogged to hell atm.

I ordered a lightbulb - yes a 5 euro lightbulb - from DX during the summer. It arrived a few days ago. Almost 4 months without a bedside lamp simply because I kept telling myself 'sure it'd be a waste to buy one now, I have one on the way from DX!'.

So I'm looking for a replacement for my wife's written off S4 (she didn't want a case because it didn't look nice but kept dropping it, don't get me started!).

Only seen this ali express site now and seeing an S5 on sale for €140 before import tax. Seems too good to be true to me. Is is an genuine S5? Is there anything major risk in this?

Do you pay custom tax on the price you paid for it or what it would cost in Ireland?

It will be a clone of an S5,not saying it's a bad phone but the problem with these clones is that if customs deem they are counterfeit then it's bye bye phone and your money.

Check out the thread on Chinese phones for advice on what to buy in that price range,I have a Chinese phone myself & I find it brilliant.I ordered mine from Pandawill.

Thanks. I'm generally of the opinion that if it looks too good to be true, then it generally is. Will probably give it a skip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

You're paying for it to look like the S5, so they take a skip over specs and the phones are generally terrible.
You also can't trust the spec sheets or the benchmarks they give as they are all S5 benchmarks.

I'd avoid. But each to their own.

If your wife is a dropper, don't buy chinese. Its a disaster to fix a screen if it breaks.

A Moto G(im sorry) is a great option for a cheap price and should be much easier to source screens for.

+1 on the MotoG,I got one for the missus who swore by her Samsung & she's delighted with it.
This could be an alternative & ships from Europe so no customs charges: http://www.xiaomishop.com/73-xiaomi-hongmi-red-mi-note-mtk6592-octa-core-14ghz-1gb-ram-8gb-rom-55-inch-ips-ogs-screen-13mp-smartphone.html

Get her a Moto G from Tesco direct, delivered to parcel motel, great phone and good range of slim cases available.

I've bought a good few bits from Aliexpress but I don't get too caught up in these sales, you can generally find the stuff for the sale price on the site anyway.Shipping has always taken about a month via post but I'm currently waiting on 2 football shirts since the last week of August.

I think the Moto G is the best option, but for some reason she's not sold on it!! Seems like great value for money to me. But what I think doesn't matter

A second hand iPhone 4s is the only brand name phone i can think of in the same price range. Either that or another S4, second hand.

Dont go China for phones for the women. Itll only end in tears. Theres always something theyll find to whinge about.

Ive heard nothing but good things about the Moto G. Make it your mission to convince her.

Tell her it costs 600 quid and just put an X sticker over the G :)

Can anyone give a few names of trusted sellers they've used in the past? I'm very tempted to buy but am afraid of getting scammed as I've heard things about even the high rated sellers. I've never ordered from them before. I've seen lots of things I like on site but never had the balls to buy them, nothing expensive like, and I'm happy to wait weeks for them. As long as I get the product I'll be happy! Anyone have a list of people they trust? Any way to pay to make sure you're not scammed?

It's nearly impossible to get scammed as Aliexpress withold payment to sellers until you get your goods & confirm you've received them.If you've a problem you can avail of their buyer protection: http://www.aliexpress.com/buyerprotection/index.html

You can't scam them either by saying you haven't got stuff even if you have as you need to sign for it when the postman delivers.I've ordered lots & apart from some stuff being slow to arrive,I've not had a problem.

Were they all from the same seller? Was it difficult to get the refund-how did you go about it?
