I've been asked to go for an interview in a place I sent my CV to. The interview is during normal business hours and its about 30 mins from my current job...

I've no holidays left this year, and ive already called in sick a couple of days in the past year.

Any novel ideas on how to get out of work for a couole of hours for the interview??

Request a days unpaid leave for personal reasons.

    Thanks. Never thought of that.

Say I'm called back for a 2nd interview... I cant imagine it's too common to be taking random days off so close together. I wonder if it might be declined...

Ask to move the time of the interview to a time that more suits (eg lunch or before/after work)

I was thinking of that... but lunchtime wouldn't suit as it would take me at least an hour travel time there & back - then estimating another hour for the interview means I'd be trying to sneak off early and sneak back in late!

The before/after work scenario is tricky in my mind... as you don't want to be putting the other person out - it might leave a bad impression...?

Really depends on the level of job in fairness. I am a contractor so loosing half a days pay just isnt an option, so if they arent flexible it is likely that they probably are not that keen to hire.

Really depends on the profession. Been in at 8AM isnt unknown in my business

Lunch pretending it is a hospital appointment could work. No one would begrudge you an extra hours lunch at any level if you promised to make it up

If the interview is going to last an hour and getting to and from the interview takes 30 mins, why would you take the whole day off?
If it's either side of lunch, take a long lunch break and blame an appointment that overran. Otherwise, go in to work late (blame a puncture) or leave early (for an appointment)

I managed to get an interview scheduled for 7.45am once. It suited me and the interviewer at the time and I'd certainly try that again if it ever came up. I don't like having to fake dentist appointments for these things, although sometimes you have to.

Is there any chance you can schedule early before or come into work early so you can leave at 4? I should think most companies interviewing employed candidates understand the predicament. You could suggest doing the 1st interview by phone or Skype and then come in for the 2nd interview.
