Car Insurance (making a claim)

Hi, car was broken into last week, robbed the radio and damaged the passenger door, costs 1,400 to fix the damage. Insurance said they will write a cheque for value of the car as not worth to get repaired. They want the log book in order to scrap the car but the problem is I am only the named driver on the policy, the policy for the insurance is in my sisters name, she took it out for me as she had 10 years no claims and full licence. My name is on the logbook as I drive the car mostly :(

Does this mean that the insurance want the log book to check who's the registered owner of the car? :/ not trying to scam just never made a claim before so not sure how it works!

    Any advice would be great

Your sister had no insurable interest in the car if the car is in your name..that would invalidate the insurance claim as she cannot insure what isnt hers...I think you could be in trouble here..Fronting is what you have done..and I think you will end up with a big cheque for €0 sorry to say....

Ok thanks, I thought as much :/

What if I sell her the car (change name on logbook) would the insurance company find out?

you would have to backdate the sale to before the insurance policy commenced..and this would be fraud..so nope...

On anothe note if the car is drivable still which I assume it is. IMHO The policy on the car would be invalid and you would not be currently insured and this is a MUCH bigger problem

I'm sure the date that you'd 'sell' her the car would be on the log book? You could end up getting yourself in bigger trouble.

Most insurance companies do verify that your the owner of the car when your taking out insurance, did yours not?

Yes it is driving okay, just damage to the passenger door, they offered to write of the car or pay a certain amount (less excess) and we keep car and repair ourselves, no need to send in a logbook as only wanted that if scrap the car...

No afaik they never asked for proof she owned the car, the car was in my name and she took out the policy.

I agree yes we will buy new car and insure in our own name, lesson learned as I mentioned not trying to scam, just never claimed before.

They would just usually ask over the phone (recorded sometimes) , they wouldn't look for proof, as they know if there's a claim they just won't have to pay out!
If you do can manage to get a payout, definitely sort out the insurance as you will eventually be caught and done with fraud, and as the other poster has pointed out- your not insured as we speak- that could have disastrous consequences...

Out of curiosity how have you actually managed to tax the car?

Yes went into the tax office with insurance certificate and car details, paid for tax at the counter walked out with the tax disc. Never missed insurance payment and never claimed for anything before.

Can your sister get rid of it for you? You can call these companies that you should ask for proof that they have a certain licence, so that you know the car will be got rid of properly, as far as I know you transfer the ownership to them? But I'm sure your sister would have to be there..

Ah I get you. Well in relation to disposing of car I'd get your sister on board, and make sure it's with a reputable place!
