Was the National Biodiversity Data Centre the right place to record a moth larvae?

Hiya all, I'm asking because a friend who works in the conservation volunteer area mentioned to me that this site might be out of action. As it was a rare moth larvae I found and it was well out of it's usual stomping ground, I'm thinking it should definitely be recorded with the right people. Is there a more specific site I should send the info to? Can't seem to find one myself.

If there's any moth people up here interested, I'd be happy to pass on the details of what it was, where and when it was found by PM. I've just checked back on the NBDC records and it has been recorded with my name, so maybe the site is working and my friend is wrong?

I havn't heard anything about it not working, and I got an email from them relatively recently, so I think you're safe!

Oh grand so. I couldn't quite remember the name of the site till I looked it up again today, so maybe she was thinking of another one. Cheers!

When you submit a sighting to the NBDC they do not appear on the map automatically. They go through a validation process and my understanding is that batches of validated sightings are uploaded at regular intervals. So your friend could have be correct initially when checking the mapping database, your sighting may not have been on the map at the time. When you go to the welcome page of the mapping database there is a section on the bottom right hand corner of the screen - no. of records, no. of species and the date of when the database was last updated (as of today, it was last updated on the 24th of October).

You can also submit your sighting to info@mothsireland.com, which is the site used by most Moth recorders in Ireland. I am not sure if the NBDC and Moths Ireland share their data or not.

Thanks! Yes, another friendly mothsireland member pm'd me with the details of that, and I told him what it was. Turned out to be not so rare after all, but scarce and seems to be increasing. Which is good for the moth! Anyhow, he let me know that they do data share. Thanks for all the help guys :)

That's interesting mecksimay. What is a validated sighting? I have a dodgy photo on my extremely rubbish phone, but they're welcome to it!

Hi Shrap, check out the FAQ on the NBDC's website...I am unable to submit the direct link to the page here for some reason... http : // records. biodiversityireland. ie/faq.php

"What happens to my data once I submit it?
After you have submitted data to the system it will be reviewed and validated by species experts here at the Centre. If any errors are noticed or if further validation is required you may be contacted via email by a species expert from the centre. Once validation has been completed your data will then be loaded to the mapping system. After this loading process is complete you will be able to take advantage of all the advanced functionality provided by the mapping system to examine your data such as live mapping and generating reports, to name but a few."

I guess they need to make ensure that there are no sightings submitted erroneously!

Oh ta. I'd better hang on to the photo then! Sorry, looks like I didn't do any research at all into the way these websites work - will know better next time ;-)
