    Hi,

I was just wondering if anybody could help me in regards to good resources for helping someone with aphasia after a stroke? Is there any good websites/ books I could get some worksheets or if anybody had any recommendations of anything they may have found helpful with family members etc with aphasia.

Thank you and I hope this is an appropriate place to post this!

    Hi,

There are a variety of resources/exercises available to help someone who has aphasia after stroke. Speech and Language Therapy is the best option but if you are looking for exercises you can do at home you could try using an app such as the Talk Around It app. This provides images, audio and written cues to help the person produce the correct word. It is based on a widely used therapy for word finding difficulties. (In the interest of transparency I have to say that we developed the app). You can read more about our work and the reason we started Neuro Hero at neurohero.com. Feel free to contact us if you wish to speak to a member of our team who can provide you with additional information.

There are also a number of support groups. You can find more information from the Aphasia Ireland charity.

    Best wishes.

    Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I will definitely have a look at the app/website later!
    Appreciate it, thanks :)

    Hi Geeg,

Apologies for the delayed response I am only seeing this now.

Neurohero is an excellent resource and definitely worth checking out. Image2talk is quite a good app for individuals who respond well to visual imagery: http://www.image2talkapp.com/
Similarly, there is an Irish company that sells booklets with images which are very useful and handy to have around the house. Link is here: http://seeitsayit.weebly.com/

There are a number of conversation groups nationwide for people with aphasia. If you live in Dublin I would check out the volunteer stroke scheme, peamount aphasia group and the aphasia groups run by Aisling Creed in Tallaght and Blanchardstown library. Depending on age, organisations such as Headway and Acquired brain injury Ireland also run similar groups.

Please also check out my twitter account @AphasiaIreland :)
