I'm planning on booking flights to Faro, Portugal from Dublin next August. I want to book the flights this week but my current passport is out of date next June so I will be getting a new one before I go. I was wondering if your passport details are required for booking or of it's only needed for the online check in?

Have you been in a similar situation? Thanks for the prompt reply!

You only need it for check in. I just booked some flights with Ryanair yesterday to Slovakia, no passport details required.
