Picked up a 500gb external HDD for €20 and a 320gb for €16 in Dunnes Stores Castlebar. 75% off, they may be in other stores but I'm not sure.

Both drives are USB 2 and 2.5" powered by USB cable. MyDrive Platinum is the brand if anyone wants to look online.

Is your Data only worth €20 to you?

€50 a gig recovery when this drive goes kaput.

Its only for my movies and tv shows so it wouldn't be the end of the world to me but I see your point.

Anybody silly enough to store important data on one single drive without backing it up deserves to lose it. This would make an ideal backup drive at that price.

    Ok, agreed.

Just don't put on photos of your kids, and birthday videos etc. Lose them and the wife will have you out on your ear!

yea but where does it end.you back it up onto a drive and it fails, should you have backed that up to?what if that one fails, may as well back that up as well....................................

I'm going to put the drive inside my laptop and reuse the 320gb that's in it. I'll post back tomorrow what make HDD is inside.

The cheapest I could find this item online was €60, so €20 is a real deal.

€50 per GB recovered is a worse case scenario, and I don't believe this particular drive would be any more prone to failure than other drives.

Would be worth checking the read and write speeds of the external drive before shoving it in your laptop. It might be dog slow compared to the one you have in it already.

Its states on their website its 35mbs read and 25mbs write. I copied a few files over through USB and avg 42mbs write, peaked at 70mbs.

The likelyhood of a second, non-identical drive failing whilst you back it up to the third you've just bought is extremely low.

About as likely as a cloud storage provider losing your data, if that was going to be the suggestion.

Using identical drives from the same batch as backups of each other runs a much higher risk of manufacturing faults.

You'd have to be seriously unlucky to have two or three drives fail at the same time. Cloud storage is so cheap now anyway that losing data should hopefully soon become a thing of the past.

With ADSL internet connection as lot of people have at the moment using cloud is like buying restaurant to eat a breakfast. It is FASTER and much more reliable to keep data on USB. At least here in Ireland.

UPC's implementation of EuroDOCSIS basically means even those of us with working 200mbit downlink speeds are only getting ~15mbit (sold as 10mbit) uplink - its not just an ADSL problem.

the rule of thumb for critical data is "3-2-1"

3 copies of your data, two local and one remote.

i.e. keep critical data on your PC or laptop with a copy on a USB drive and another copy in dropbox or google drive etc. so your local copy saves against a single drive failure, with the remote copy saving against your house burning down or being burgled.

You have to take into consideration that EVERY disk is 100% guaranteed that it WILL fail sooner or later, it's just a matter of WHEN, not IF, so not backing up important data to at least one other location (but preferably two) is a surefire recipe for disaster, but you won't know when that will be until it's too late, so it's basically playing russian roulette with your data, as any given drive could fail after a week, a month, a year, three years or longer, but you have very little chance of finding out exactly when that will be, so better safe than sorry as you aren't likely to realise how important your data is until after it's gone.

More likely is a virus or data corruption that happens on one disk and you copy to your other drives. So having a copy on another medium like dvd or the cloud at least of the critical stuff is vital.

Also keep old versions. Say 12, 6 & 1 month versions. So I you find a problem you can go back to an older version.

    Consider encryption also.

Picked up 2 320Gb in Mallow for €16.25 - no 500Gb available. It looks like the deal isn't limited to just one store.

Sold out in Castlebar now. A friend went in and a girl told him that the staff had purchased them all.

    DunneStores, Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.

Might not be any on the shelves but could be worth asking someone.
I took the last 320gb box of the shelf but when a member of staff went to get an actual product she had boxes of the 500gb in storage.

Just got the last 500gb in Cornelscourt, had to ask a manager who checked a back room, had 1 of each left, said he wasn't getting any more in, think he was putting the other one on the shelf. Thanks OP!

Picked up one of each in Newbridge .
    Cheers OP.

Staff weren't aware of the offer but showed interest when they saw the reductions .

Apparently there were some left "upstairs in the office " but I'd guess the staff may nab them.

Same story in Castlebar, staff knew nothing about it. One member thought it was 20% off until I asked to have a look.
Hope some stores have a few left for boardies.

FWIW the drives are Hitachi 5400 rpm with 8 MB cache.

Averaging 15 MB/sec write on mixed photo/video transfer.

Asked at Customer service desk, they checked the office and came out with it, thought it was 79 but when scanned through it was 20

There are only a handful of HDD manufacturers in the world, so its made by one of them, no reason to think that a drive thats being sold cheap is a cheap drive.
