    Hi All,

Any lads here running Salers in a Suckler herd?

I remember they were the buz word a few years back calling them the ultimate Suckler cow. At that time alot of guys were complaining about their temperament, just wondering if an guys here have them

Their scarce enough in the marts, would chance 4 or 5 heifers if I could get them at commercial prices.

Saler cows are becoming more popular in my area. Their good calving ability seems to be their main selling point along with plenty of milk. I've heard it said that saler cross cattle can be hard enough finished. Is there any truth to this?

Have a few Salers cows in the herd.

Very good mothers, plenty of milk and no problem calving.

    No issue with temperament.

Some Salers calves on the ground also. Easy calved by two year old heifers.

Salers bull in the herd serving cows at present, hoping to breed my own replacement heifers from him. Also using ZLA bull on 15 month old heifers being served at present.

salers are always the last in my bunch to get flesh on their backs and they are always the last out the gate to the factory, in my experience they always needed a few extra weeks feeding, they don't seem to mature until 3 year old !

a lad I know has limy x saler breeding and ill tell you something he herds them in the jeep!

salers haven't given me much grief but they have always been in a big settled bunch of cattle

Are they really that hard to finish? I have a salers bull running with my suckler cows, hoping to build up a herd of salers x cows. The bull is out of BHU, there are some nice weanling heifers out of him already and more coming next spring hopefully. he will be changed for another salers bull shortly.

Have read a bit on the salers, from what I read they are usually purebred and those not kept for ped breeding are crossed to a ch bull. Given the fondness for the strawberry CHx in my local mart, I'm giving serious consideration to purchasing one or two pbr. Also given the new walls that I got built (pictures on picture thread) should have no problem holding them if they have temp issues.;:D

    Hi

Chris Daly - ICBF - 6 year old RIO cow with Lisnagre Elite Calf 13 months 670kgs - she had a Fiston this year (photos were on PG Facebook).

I am very fond of Saler cows, they have super maternal indexes. Big hips - calve anything, lots of milk, great mix with CH.

Just ring someone from the Salers Society...

    Temperament still questionable imo

Gort mart used to do an annual sale of unaltered females......might be worth a call.......a dairy man I know swapped his Angus bulls for 2 salers and he delighted with them....much better temperament than the Angus he says........he says the trick is they hate being hunted but will come in when called a bit like the way they roam the hills in france
