Applying for a specific job in England.

Hi folks. I currently have a contract doing work that I am very lucky to have as it is a rather skilled job on a career path that seems difficult to get started on. This contract is up in a few weeks.

I've just seen the perfect job which I feel I'm perfectly qualified for in England. It is for recent graduates so I think I would be in with a very good chance...if it was in Ireland. I'm under the impression that it would be quite a bit of hassle for a company in England to hire someone from Ireland when interviews would be a big part of the process. The salary isn't great (I think (£20,000 p/a)) but they offer a relocation package. I am very good with money, have no major expenditures and it is the experience I really want out of it.

To make me seem more appealing I was thinking of including in my cover letter that 'I would happily waive the relocation package' for the opportunity and because I am eager to travel/relocate.

Is it right to say I would waive the relocation package? I know nothing about them but would presume it would cost a company more to relocate someone from a different country.

Am I framing the question correctly? Is there a way I could say it without seeming like I'm begging, or does it matter?

And finally, have you tips on how to make myself more appealing so they will take the risk on employing some one from a different country when they have no need to?

    Thanks,

Personally I wouldn't mention anything about the relocation package. If they say that they offer a relocation package then surely they would consider hiring someone from a different country? I got a relocation package when I came to Ireland, they basically paid for my flight over, an additional piece of luggage and a bit of extra cash, and I think I could have got my accommodation sorted out for the first 2 weeks or so too (didn't need that though). It would have added up to a good bit less than 1k in total even if I had got the accommodation through them, so not a huge amount of money for most companies.

Do you have any family or friends in the UK whose address you can use on your application?
Is there anyone in the company who you can contact to enquire whether they will accept overseas applications?
Does the relocation package specifically relate to relocation within the UK?
Being based in the UK makes the application process a lot easier and will give a better chance of success but i think it depends on the company. .

I just thought mentioning the relocation package might give a slight advantage but then again I didn't have a clue how much it was worth until I saw your post. Thanks very much.

I have friends in the UK all right. Would it be risky to use a UK address? If I got a call for an interview on short notice or anything like that. I don't know about the relocation package apart from the fact that there is one. Cheers,

Thats what I would do if i was looking for work in the UK. Id say I was staying at the Uk address to look for work in the UK but originally from Dublin, i would look at getting a UK social security number too. I dont think it looks deceptive or unreasonable. The interview would presumably be at short notice anyway irrespective of your location.

Say I was from Dublin!? I want to get the job!! I'd be better of being honest I think!

    That's good advice though, thanks.

You'll probably be considered with the Irish address etc- just be sure to put on the cover note that you will travel if shortlisted to meet them and you are looking to relocate there.

I don't think you can get a NI Number (social security number) unless you are resident at an address in the UK and have been offered work.
