Repurposing an old PC as a home server vs Buying / Building

    Hey guys,

I set up Plex on my home PC yesterday and this got me thinking how useful it would be to have an in-home server to act as a Plex Server / Torrent Seeding / Web server etc. You get the picture.

My next question is whether to bother re-purposing my old PC to run as an Ubuntu Server, or not to bother. It's old. Would have been bought in 00 / 01 but still runs decently. Just wondering if it would be worth the effort or should I just buy a micro server or build a new server myself.

    Any input appreciated.

I transitioned from an old E6700/4GB machine to a new Avaton Octa-core build recently, so similar situation. The reason I did it was storage, old machine was doing ok and could have taken a quad but couldnt support a rake of drives. The new build has 8 bays and 12 Sata ports, so I can keep on growing. If you plan on using it for backups or seed a lot of content I'd look to have enough space for drives a plenty, its too soon to be putting 8TB disks in arrays.

Yeah Storage is definitely the big let down.. I can imagine it wouldn't fit too many drives. Can't remember the exact specs but as far as I remember it's running about 1GB of DDR RAM. 1Ghz dual core. So not much performance out of it either.

Thats probably too weak unless its role is going to be very light.

Yeah it's probably not worth it so. Just seems a shame to have it wasting away in a cupboard.
