Phone line installation

    Hi

My house currently has no phone line. I would like to get it installed for broadband.

The problem is that my house is down the end of a private lane that is about 250 metres long.

Do I need to run the cable from my house to the public road myself ?

If I put a box the the end of my lane (with power) could I put the modem there and run Ethernet (or possibly a good wireless link) the rest of the way to my house. This would mean a shorter distance which would be better for fibre broadband. or would the extra 250 metres make any difference.

The max of Ethernet is 100m, run fibre optic instead, it's not that expensive and would leave you futureproof. You'd have to use gigabit to fibre converters either end.

Well I was thinking id need some sort of ethernet repeaters. I had not thought of Firbre optic so would probably go with that.

I dont know whether I would be better off with the modem at the house or at the end of the lane. Or would eircom even terminate the phone line so far from the house.

Modem at the house would mean 250m extra of copper dropwire and losing tens of mbits of bandwidth. Eircom will install in anything solid and proper, you could get one of their ETUs and build it into something, build a pillar, make a feature of it

Ok Thanks for the advice. Think I will bite the bullet and go this route.

Might want to research fibre more, the fibre I posted was just an example, there may be a better deal or better quality. Someone else may post a better option

Yes definitely need to more research. Sounds like it could be the job though.

If I'm not mistaken Eircom currently have a hush-hush don't tell anyone special offer on that means there is no charge for installation of new phone lines, of any type - whether replacing an old, fixing an old one, or putting in a brand new line - check it out with them!

Eircom cover the cost of phoneline installation, up to €7000 as they are required to by comreg. After that, costs are incurred by the customer.

Yep, its part of their Universal Service Obligation, it also applies to phone lines installed by Eircom on behalf of other providers such as Sky or Vodafone

I presume you are looking more for broadband than a fixed line ?
Apparently you can get just that from vodafone, no experience of same but why one would have to get a phone line just for broadband is beyond me in this day and age.
