Maxi 35/80 Boiler problem

    Hi,

My gas boiler has been acting up recently and seems to have a mind of it's own,

The flame will ignite whenever it feels and the result varies between the rads being on at random times or the boiler heating the water all day long. The only way to rectify the situation is to switch the boiler off. I have used the reset function on the dial but no joy. I have checked the digital controller to ensure it was not inadvertently sending a signal to the boiler but even when that was removed the boiler was still trying to heat the water.

I have opened the boiler and visually inspected the PCB but nothing appears to be blown oor damaged.

My question is whether the problem most likely lies in the PCB on the boiler or is there any other checks I can do before buying a new PCB?

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unless you are a registered gas installer you can't do any more (you have already done too much).
There's some decent lads on here just put up your location and someone should be able to sort out out for you.

I'm thinking volt free and 240 mixed together. Was this always the case op or is it only recently happening?

    hi Dtp1979,

This boiler was acting up a little last year but I was able to remedy the situation via the reset function on the boiler. nothing has been done to the boiler so I can't see how volt free and 230v could get mixed up?

Thanks for the advice wilser, I was hoping to just source a replacement PCB and install myself as I cannot see what else a registered gas installer is going to do but i guess for the sake of a few quid i better get one in i suppose.

A few years ago this is what most people could do but its illegal for anyone except an rgi to work on any gas appliance.
Do you have any motorised valves on the system?
Had a gas boiler last week that was coming on by itself at all times and the problem was a motorised valve that was jammed open.

You don't know what you don't.

Before a RGI works on a gas appliance he/she is firstly asking themselves is this appliance safe and are there any installion safety issues. This is the most basic principle of gas fitting but one not thought about or followed by home owners.

There's a mantra gas fitters use "safety, safety, safety" where as those without gas training prefer the "it's not going to happen to me" school of thought.

So getting a RGI is the best option and I'm sure swapping out the pcb is going to be easy but there's always the small chance something naughty will be spotted when it's being looked for.
