Have 6 months back tax to pay on my car, wondering if I were to put the car in my boyfriends name and then in mine would I still have to pay the back tax or would it just be from the day the car is back in my name?

Someone has just asked me pretty much this identical question.

Does anyone know the answer? I would have thought they'd be wise to it. Surely they would still chase the owner for the original owner for the back tax rather than write it off?

    question asked before.

when ownership changes the tax is no longer due. Of course you haven't been driving around for six months with no tax now have you?

Ha. I wish! Somewhat stupidly I am all up to date paying my €511 every 3 months

It would appear I am the only one out of my office that would give the motor tax people any credit in thinking they'd cop on to such a scam.....

Once ownership changed any arrears are gone, then when transferred back they are also gone.

€2044 a year tax? I take it the 'golf' in your username refers to the hole-in-one variety rather than the 1.4 runabout variety!

Indeed it does. I'm one of the rare few that seeks out bigger engined cars. A car needs to deliver enjoyment to me. I can't stand boring run a rounds. There's such value to be had on the bigger stuff its great and I try and justify the difference in road tax by saying its only €100 a month more to drive something that puts a smile on your face!!! :D

I guess its all about priorities.

I'd love to be able to justify it for myself but had to let my A3 go when tax went north of €700!

If I had the funds I'd definitely look at it the same way.

Does it have any affect on insurance?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I spoke to someone recently, him and his brother share about four cars and manage to dodge paying tax by swapping them every three months or so

Shouldn't really..they only thing it would effect really is the re-sale value of the car as every time you swap its essentially adding a new owner on the car.

Friend of mine does this quite often and his car has now had 11 owners
