Counselling, psychotherapy or psychology

    Hello all,

I am looking for some mental health support and I am very confused by the different titles and accreditations as to who/what would suit me best.

I am awaiting a psychiatric referral/appointment through my GP but it could be some time. In the meantime, I am taking some medication prescribed by my GP. I also need/want to also attend a counsellor/psychotherapist/psychologist/CBT therapist in the interim. I've been looking at the IACP, psychotherapy-ireland, PSI websites and I got 4/5 names from my GP but I have no idea how to choose someone. I don't know what the different approaches are and the differences between these professions.

I have attended an IACP accredited person in the past (12 sessions) who tried an EMDR approach - which I hated!

    Any advice?
    Thanks

Have you looked at the Find a Counsellor/therapist/psychologist thread? Lots of links and information there.

Yes I did thanks but I couldn't work out which approach might suit me best.
Is it a case of trial and error?

I read about the different disciplines and they all seem to have their pros and cons.

Well I would think it's a matter of working out

    1. which therapy works (which has the evidence base), plus
    2. which ones you prefer yourself, plus
    3. finding a therapist that YOU can get on with.

Do talk with therapists on the phone before setting up an appointment. The sticky will give you some guidelines as to what to ask. What are you comfortable with?
