I have a habit of trusting sellers who seem to make completely unnecessary and avoidable mistakes and make a sale look completely dodgy in doing so by their lack of common sense. It happened again this week, I went to Pembroke and met a seller with the vehicle outside the port. Only had an hour or so to test drive, inspect and do the sale before the next ferry left, or I'd be waiting another 12 hours before the next one.

He decided to fill in my info and sign my name on the V5 cert and send it off in the post, BEFORE meeting me  I won an auction on eBay, but ****, I could have still decided not to pay the cash on the day and pulled out

Anyway, the van all seemed legit and my poker reading abilities had to come into play and determine is it just a stupid mistake, or a clever con. I pointed out that I think he filled in the wrong section and decided anyway to do the sale.

The UK DVLA won't give me the parts I need to present to the VRT inspectors so I've to apply for an Export Certificate from them instead. They said maybe the VRT would accept the sections I have, but they won't unfortunately. I'm just wondering has anyone had to go through this process before and how long it may take before receiving it and getting the van registered?

The seller has been apologetic since at least, but still, an easily avoidable situation!

Nooo, don't tell me that :( I was onto the DVLA yesterday and was told they'd send me an application via email which I still haven't gotten yet. But I think they have to wait to receive the V5 and for it to be processed before they can issue anything anyway. :(

happened to my brother too, 5 -6 weeks wait from DVLA more like, not 3.

Maybe we can play big cash poker for a couple of weeks while you wait.

You're in Australia? I only play live :pac:

5-6 weeks? Damn, can I invoice the seller for inconvenience :)

should have walked away, but how can you when you've paid for the ferry already? I did similar, bought a Cortina on ebay that was cheap but very misdescribed...what could I do? had to get home and the ferry was paid for, so I paid up. what a shed, was lucky to get it home and sold it without even sitting back into it.

Yeah, luckily I can wait. I trust the seller, somewhat, just think he was very silly to do what he did. The vehicle itself is exactly what I need and rare enough to come by so it was easier just to go ahead with it then having to find another. I only booked the ferry after I bought it so could have gotten back much cheaper as a foot passenger, but still, would be a huge waste of a day. Let's just hope whatever system they have, it's been sped up a little and won't take that long. I'll just keep ringing up I guess :) It's also annoying the DVLA guy said maybe VRT can take the section I have, as it still describes the vehicle, but not to the full extent the rest does.

So very little progress on this so far. I sent off my application form via email, just filled in the PDF and gave it a digital signature to speed things up. I wasn't 100% sure if the engine number I had was correct and rang them to check and they said it's been sent for scanning and they wouldn't be able to tell me if there's a problem with the engine number until the results were in. I thought this would be something they could manually do. They said to ring back today so I'll give them a call later.

In the mean time, what's the story with driving the van here? As long as I have it insured, is it ok to drive around until I get everything sorted? It's annoying I can't do anything like get it weighed, get the DOE etc until I have an Irish reg, at least I could be doing that while waiting :(

A V62 form will get you a replacement V5. It's for lost V5 replacements etc. might end up quicker than trying to sort the mess.

Thanks for the suggestion. A positive (I hope) turnaround has happened, the seller was for some reason posted back the V5 and has now sent it on to me, so I can just bring that for an inspection I booked for this Friday, hopefully it comes on time and then that will be that!

I'm guessing that it landed on someones desk that had a bit of cop on, seen that it was being exported, knew the seller should have handed over the V5, so "returned to sender" to enable him to do just that. Worked out for you in the end :)

Ughh, so I had my VRT inspection yesterday and they didn't accept the V5 as it was missing the front cover: checkV5-for-mot-due-date1.png

The seller must have either sent it back with the export slip, or binned it or shredded it or something before sending me the rest, but the VRT now either need it sent on to me or an export certificate instead.

I got back on to the seller and he said he didn't have it, I rang DVLA and they said there's no way they would have reissued a V5 without it and then the seller acted like I was the problem, saying he had sold 8/9 vehicles to people in Ireland and I'm the only one with a problem and some of them didn't even ask for the V5.

If your missing the front cover, surly then you are also missing the majority of the vehicles details as these are on the reverse of it.

Just wait for the export certificate.

Nah, all the vehicle details are on the part I have, the front cover must be separate to this even still. I was told I needed the page with all the details when I rang before so thought I'd be ok once I had this going in for inspection but they still needed the front cover too :(

    What did you buy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

the part you need has two detachable sections at the bottom.

The whole V5 is a folded A3 sheet; there is no separate cover. The reverse of the front page contains 4-5 sections and that is the main page including all the relevant details. The detachable sections repeat the same information for various purposes - one to detach and send to DVLA when the vehicle is sold into the trade, one to give to a new owner while the DVLA details are updated etc.

Not this one I don't think, this is a Welsh one with the reverse of each section being the same information in Welsh, I have 2 a4 pages attached, one has section 4-8, the other 9-12 with the exact same info on the reverse in Welsh. I don't have section 1-3 :(

As usual, I'm posting the sequence of events so anyone can check how the process can work if it doesn't go to plan, myself as well in future if I ever buy another vehicle (ford transit by the way YouTookMyName).

So I rang up to check the progress of the export certificate and was told it is scheduled for completion for the 26th. I asked is there any way to speed it up and they said only if I can send a copy of the V5 I have and as long as it's the latest issued V5 (why I wasn't told this when I rang them on Friday I don't know). Anyway, I took photos and send them via email and got a call back from the lady dealing with it and she said she'd be able to process and send the export certificate out today with 2nd class mail :)

She said that the documents I have should have been enough for the VRT to accept and they shouldn't need the front part and whoever told me that gave me wrong information?

Once I get the Export Cert, I need to send off the V5 back to them:
    exports
    dvla
    Swansea sa99 1ag.

as I can't have both. I'm half tempted to go back to VRT office and try apply again and get it registered today, but I guess they'll then need to hold on to the V5, but maybe I can pop the Export cert to them and they can send one back to the DVLA.

EDIT: Just off the phone to the VRT office and explained the situation, the lady had to ask a senior staff member who said that you need the full V5. So I'll need to wait for the export cert!

Just to wind this up, post arrived from the UK, I opened it and saw it wasn't the export cert, but the front page that was originally missing. So the seller DID have it and he sent it and it got to me before the export cert did. I went back to the NCT and got it registered no problem and then got the export cert a few days later. All good in that regard but it failed the DOE on a rusted chassis which is not costing a good few hundred to put right, after it having passed the MOT just a few weeks prior

I'm told you will now have to get an Engineers Report done once you've fixed it before they will CVRT it.

If cormie has a problem, it's been asked about on boards.ie already :pac:

Well this all in all turned out to be a complete nightmare. I finally got it passed the DOE on the 23rd, but that was too late for the retest period and I had to pay the full retest fee again. The delay was a combination of the mechanic being messed around by the steel fabricators and then not being able to get an engineer to come to do a report on it and typically, the day it was actually ready was the last day to bring it for the retest, which happened to be the same day I had to leave first thing for a European job and couldn't arrange someone else to bring it. Up until that point, I didn't delay anything, I brought it for the VRT as soon as I could, I brought it for the DOE as soon as I could etc, a process that could have been complete in 2-3 days ended up taking what, about 8 weeks with all the messing about.

I paid a repair bill of €1,070 and the engineer isn't too confident in the chassis lasting more than another few years if even so I might be running into the same repairs again, or worse.

I'm pretty pissed off that the van passed the MOT only weeks before I bought it, but completely failed the DOE. I didn't realise the DOE was more advanced than the MOT in terms of not being a case of who you know.

I'll let the seller know the ordeal I had to go through and the true condition of the van, I suspect he may know already even though he told me in writing there was nothing mentioned in any tests that would need to be repaired etc in the coming months. I know it's up to me to inspect it fully so at least now I know exactly what to look out for in a chassis, which I didn't before.

The last icing on the cake was rushing out to the tax office the day it passed after the test to get it taxed and all wrapped up before Christmas and I didn't have my tax clearance cert/vat reg proof to accompany the commercial use only declaration so I couldn't tax it. Now they only open again on the 30th, so I'm wondering now if I wait until January, will I save myself a month, or will I still need to pay the arrears?
