4Thumps Irish Boxing Podcast

Hi Pacman, cheers for the comments. As regards your questions, Joe Ward and David Oliver Joyce are likely to gain another chance to qualify for the Olympics next year at the World Championships in Doha, should they be selected for the Ireland team. That's not a given, considering neither man will box in the 2014 Elite Senior Championships so whoever wins at their weights will get something of a say, although hard to see Darren O'Neill, for instance should he take 81kg, being selected over Ward. However with new regulations, 2015 is going to be very interesting and contentious. For instance, boxers must qualify for the European Games (Baku) via the European Championships (TBC). The European Games medallists will qualify for the Worlds in Doha, where qualification routes are offered towards Rio. It's continuous assessment gone mad.

Other options for Ward and Joyce are to compete in the WSB and try qualify that route, though I'm unsure if this can even be done in 2015 due to registry, or go again in APB which they are signed up to. The cannot qualify via the pre-ranking tournament which concludes in January anyway. I'm off for a Panadol now!

As for the podcast, we will be looking to bring it to iTunes soon, YouTube as well as Soundcloud. The more ears, the more it can grow. Recording the second show this week and optimistic we can bring quality content and interesting guests to the fray.

    Cheers

Glad you enjoyed the show, Doug, making a new one soon and planning to bring it out on a weekly basis. You'll understand we're just making our way after one show, but optimistic we can deliver something that's needed on the scene here that's currently uncatered for.

    Cheers

it sounds good...good clear sound...and good articulate presenting / debating...be good if that got on regular podcast apps too....from a selfish point of view (i listen to podcasts on dog walks mainly)...but i hope to be a regular listener.

Which would be your preferred way to listen, Doug? We are looking to go on iTunes shortly and will then investigate other ways of getting the show out there other than just Soundcloud. Second show is just in the editing process now by the way.

Show No 4 with Matthew Macklin. An admirable man. Defeat, no matter how many times it comes, is still not an option.

that was a great interview with macklin...i was glad the southpaw stance of this opponent was spoke about...i was watching the matinez fight earlier thinking about that and couldnt figure out if it was a good barometer to judge, as i am not sure how good that martinez actually was, good as macklin did....since that he manhandled chavez jr who i think has commitment issues with the sport, and martin murray who i think has looked very lackluster in obscure fights in obscure places since...and what blown up cotto did......but this is getting away from macklin.....been looking at this man heiland, he judges distance well, but he's hittable...i wonder how, despite how he sounds, much ambition a road weary macklin might have now at this stage...business doing well over in marbella.....other side of that is, i'd give him a good shot at cotto if the alverez fight didnt happen, or if cotto decided on using him as a warm-up...so he has a big prize to aim for if the cards fell right...lineal title too, which to some is a precious thing.
whatever happens...macklin will put up a good show...and of course i hope he wins well.

Didn't go as planned for Macklin, obviously, and clearly the Heiland team were right to feel he was damaged goods after his time near the top. Incidentally, I see Macklin is due on Ringside tonight where he'll maybe announce what's next for him.

We made the fourth show today, will be putting it out tomorrow. Visited the Celtic Warriors Gym in Corduff to sit with Spike O'Sullivan and Stephen Ormond. Good stuff from the lads and all going well 2015 will be a success for them.

I incorrectly stated that last week's show was the fourth edition; twas the third.

Here's the fourth, a sitdown interview with Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan and Stephen Ormond.

Fifth edition of the show focuses on Katie Taylor's incredible fifth gold medal at the Worlds and hears from Zaur Antia, the man with huge responsibility for making it happen.

We've also heard from Tyson Fury ahead of the Chisora rematch and he talks about his ability to win a fight after getting knocked down hard, future fights at Croke Park, meeting an old rival and an astonishing refusal to sing for a packed train cart.

Newcomer Jono Carroll features on the 6th ep of 4Thumps ahead of his Prizefighter appearance this weekend. The team runs through past Irish entrants, some memorable; many more best forgotten. Take a listen and as ever, all feedback welcome.

    Cheers, Kev

Took quite a while, but the podcast is available for download here. We haven't got all the episodes up, but the bulk is there.

Next episode and season finale is due out tomorrow, a feature interview with Andy Lee the new WBO world middleweight champion. It was good craic to make. That's us done for 2014.
