Has anybody on here had a negative result reversed with a retest? I am in the third year of the programme, have never had a positive and after using a bvd free bull and buying in no stock I get a text this morning to tell me I have two. Gutted.

in same boat, closed herd, never had a negative since i started test in 2012, this year so far ive had 4 and 1 inconclusive from 16 calved so far!
its a serious headache. have blooded all my cows since and all clear, bulls are clear and only heifer i bought in last year is clear..
my calves are gone for retest this week but im not expecting any miracles, my biggest fear is will it stop here for me or how many more will i have..have vaccinated all my cows since. looking like it will be expensive lesson for me by the time ive counted the cost of testing and vaccination and loss of stock, would urge lads to start vaccinating

its laughable that we are nearly finished the 3rd year of the scheme and people are still holding on to bvd positives:mad:

A closed herd means nothing bought in, including bulls. Vet here said a transient infection could stay within the herd for 4 years without a pi being present, cows getting transient infection passing it on but then clearing themselves. The heifer could have picked it up in a mart or anywhere b4 arriving to u

she came direct from previous owners yard, in any event she was housed with weanlings in another shed separate from cows last winter so i dont think she is the problem

Just to avoid some confusion. While being informed you have may have a PI calf in your herd is 'negative' event and you may experience 'negative' emotions, the result of the test would be described as 'positive' in the lab. Be careful of the terminology so we are all thinking and talking about the same thing.

Why did you retest a negative?

Maybe they suspected that something wasn't right and did another test. It has happened that animals which tested negative later tested positive and were actually Pi's all along.

I didn't. My mistake in the op.

If you got a BVD positive result with the ear notch test I would wait three weeks and retest using a blood test which is more reliable to ensure the animals are not transiently infected. I'd test all animals in the herd which haven't been tested already.

I've heard plenty of that type of shenanigans going on . I reckon there are alot of BVD calves kept and people aren't saying it .
