The house I'm renting the aerial doesn't work so we have an old sky box hooked up to get freeview channels but it doesn't receive the Irish channels.
If I buy a saorview box will it work via the dish or does it need an aerial?

It needs a UHF aerial, the dish will not pick them up without a Sky subscription.

You can receive saorview channels by satellite, but you'd have to move the dish and you'd lose the UK freeview ones.
The UHF aerial and a saorview receiver, or MUCH handier to get one that does both satellite and UHF so that you only have one set top box.

Are you absolutely certain that the aerial isn't working? It might not be perfect, but any older aerial that received UHF should pull a usable signal down to your TV.
Have you plugged in a saorview receiver to it and made sure the cable is connected all the way to the roof?
If not, your landlord might be happy enough for you to get a saorview aerial fitted - they're not expensive and easy to aim.
