Bugger, what was it about (apart from the obvious) ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭spoke2cun

It follows a group of former rugby internationals as they cycle their way from malin head to mizen head in aid of cancer research. It will probably be repeated if you keep an eye on the setanta schedule. It was a free view event and well worth watching. I'd really like to do something like this.

Just go for it. I thought about doing a big organised one for charity but then decided it wouldn't feel right asking for money to pay for something I wanted to do - and paying for it myself would be too expensive.

So I did it by myself a few years ago over 4 days (+1 day getting to the start and another day to get home) and had a great time. Carried all my kit on me and stopped in B&B's/Hostels in Listowel, Galway and Rossnowlagh (nr Donegal town).

Train and Coach down to Schull and then a short cycle to the start at Mizen. Then a coach back from Cardonagh (nearest place from Malin).

Did it the year after with a couple of friends and whilst I enjoyed the craic it was in some ways better the year before when I was going at my own pace and could stop when I wanted.

Highlight was sitting in the early morning heat of the sunrise, just north of Malin town, watching sea otters fish.

I'd say that was last years event. I did this years Cross Rugby Legends Mizen to Malin. Fantastic event, really well organised and there was a great bunch of people involved. Well worth doing some time. We also had unbelievable weather. It's a bit more than your standard M2M as it's 850km over 7 days. I think the standard M2M is around 650km.

Something I'd love to do some day too. Was there a specific reason you decided to go direction Mizen to Malin? How did you decide the route? It'd be tempting to take longer and go via more picturesque rather than shortest distance.

Prevailing wind is south to north so that made my mind up. Route wise I just used google maps and played around with it, then tried to split into roughly equal days.

Yes, I wish I'd have stuck to the coast more. Between Claregalway and Sligo the scenery wasn't that inspiring.

Cool thing to do. I have a total fancy now to chuck the job and cycle around Ireland. Must get the head down....

Did it in 2010 for charity with 6 more. Was good crack, did it over 5 days and we managed to get free accommodation from all the hotel en route!
Raised over 20k euro in the process.

A coastal tour of Ireland would be classic.

Did Malin to Mizen in 2009, doing it again next year. Went a pretty scenic route apart from the first two days, so need to work on that. Can't wait.

Did the route below last year. 10 days. Our little country sure is nice.

Wow, looks a great route, very jealous

I dont think I will ever get the time to do that kind of trip. Best I can hope for is to shortlist the coastal sections I really want to do on the bike and tick them off over the years.

So sorry I missed that. Me and a group of 79 others done it the same week as the rugby legends this year. we landed at Malin just after them. They left on the Saturday and we left on Monday but on a different route to them. They cycled something like 840km whereas the route we done was 650km.

We had possibly the best week of the year for it, the weather was absolutely perfect and it was such an enjoyable week. We averaged approx 130km each day.
