    Hi All,

What time of the year do cows/heifers normally be at their lowest prices?

Going by the graphs in the farmers journal factory prices for both cows and heifers have been cheapest in September for the last three years.

Ya but I am looking at buying for breeding in the mart. Prices seem to be high at the minute

They will always be high this time of year. Sfp and weanlings sales drive a lot of lads crazy. Early September is the pick of them imo. Lads willing to sell anything until the annual payment lands. From the start of October on things get crazy. A cold miserable day is another option but choice can be limited

I presume they are future suckler cows, spring time seems to be the most expensive, then they are the variables bad weather like spring 2013, the cost of wintering them, then the quality of cattle you are buying. If you are buying replacements I feel research needs to be taking into account into back breeding , maternal traits etc. Difficult job at the mart unless you know the cattle
